Midwest Fu-Bar (Fubar) 36 - for Sport or Competition Free Flight, FG-2

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

$135

Built for 'Sniffing Thermals', the honored pastime of a generation of model enthusiasts. Flying model aircraft predated powered flight; however, balsa wood and printwood were not introduced until the early 1930s and the hobby took off, as well as the hunt for thermals. Gas flight began in the early 1930s, and early gas powered models, all powered by Brown engines, took home so many awards that they were forever separated in competition from rubber powered models. Design of gas models was tricky since RC (radio control) modelscould not yet be applied to the mass market; so a gas model had to not only fly and climb under power, but then glide sufficiently - all without any operator inputs once the airplane took off. Getting the wing up out of the propeller airflow was a huge improvement, and this type of design proliferated. This is one example of a parasol style 1940s free-flight competition aircraft designed by Ray Matthews. Quality kit includes printwood, strip wood, wheels, tissue and beautiful full size plans. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions.

Orange Crush-Revell 1907 Sears Touring Buggy, 1/32

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

$79

Very rare kit with a fascinating history. Around 1958/59, Orange Crush of Mexico offered a promotion. They offered free, colorful, plastic model cars if you collected correctly-marked Orange Crush bottle caps. The models are 1/32 scale Revell Highway Pioneer series - although there is no mention of Revell or Lodela anywhere on the box. Orange Crush had the boxes and even the instructions specially made for them with no mention of a manufacture. They were never given numbers. The boxes were very thin and fragile cardboard. This has contributed to wear and you must be very cautious with them. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bag and the instructions are sealed in the bag as well. You could redeem your caps two ways - at the Orange Crush truck and at a Modelandia Hobby House. The box sides show the 18 cars in the series. Orange Crush also released two full-color booklets and a complete paint set for the cars. A colorful cardboard box held 7 colors of paint in glass bottles, complete with 'Orange Crush' screw-on caps! The entire promotion was done in coordination with Modelandia Hobby House which had up to 19 stores. Modelandia's name appears on each of the boxes and the paint as well. Robina S.A. was the bottler or distributor of Orange Crush in Mexico at that time. The box side lists the other 18 kits with small color pictures of each and shows three sizes of OC - Family Size (Familiar), Grand (Grande) and Normal. You could also obtain models with Titan bottle caps. Titan was also bottled by Robina and came in large (Titan) and smaller (Titancito) sizes and apparently more than one flavor. We do not know how Orange Crush had access to the plastic kits or who sealed the internal bags with the Crush instructions inside them. We can assume that it may have been Lodela, since they would have had access to the Revell molds. It is not know for how long the promotion lasted, but Orange Crush was one of the most dominant soft drinks in Mexico at that time. Here is one clue: some boxes claim that Modelandia had 13 locations; other boxes, which obviously came later on, claim 19 locations. This may indicate that this promotion went on for a significant amount of time.

Ideal Aeroplane & Supply Liner SS America / Troop Ship USS West Point / S.S. Australis - Wooden Ship Kit, 1/330, 605

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

$750

Very rare. This is the finest example that I have ever seen of this rare kit. Large wooden and metal kit builds to just over 26 inches long. This model is of the SS America Ocean Liner, which was designed by the famous naval architect William Francis Gibbs. She was laid down in 1938 and entered service on August 22 1940 as the flagship of the United States Lines. World War II interrupted her passenger service. The ship was active through the war. She narrowly escaped being sunk off Singapore during the Japanese invasion. After the war she resumed her North Atlantic route. The liner was the pride of the US Merchant fleet before the USS United States was commissioned. When the 'Big U' entered service, the two liners were stable mates and often appeared in the same travel agency posters and prints. By 1964 aircraft had taken a large section of the ocean liner travelers away, and the America was sold to Chandris Group and was renamed the Australis. She sailed for 14 years in a very successful career and was the last liner to sail from Southampton to Australia/New Zealand. She was laid up on 1977. She changed owners several times, but was never again successful. While being towed to Thailand, the lines broke and she ran aground in the Canary Island, where the wreak broke up after time - but not before the locals rescued many items from the ship. The model box is excellent and the kit inside is in as-new condition. Kit features pre-carved hull, metal fittings, very large full size plans, print wood and heavy cardstock, clear material for windows, color flag sheet, building instructions with perspective views and rigging material and diagrams. Never started. I believe that I was the first one to remove the parts from the box when I performed the inventory. All of the fittings are still in factory sealed bags and the tissue packing material from the factory is still present. The kit is complete with all parts and plans. You can convert it to the USS West Point if you have photos of the ship (which are on the internet) - the main difference is the addition of lifeboats and different paint. Photos of the S.S. Australis will provide the needed data to convert her to that ship, but this conversion will require more work than the West Point.

Still factory sealed. Early issue in a hardbox with great artwork. Kit is of the earliest ships built by Yankee craftsman during the Revolutionary War. The ships were speedy and handled so well that the British copied a captured brig. They were well suited to commerce raiding but were not of the size and strength needed to take on Royal Navy units. Nicely molded small scale ship model. Includes full hull, display stand and billowing sails.

Cleveland Wedell's 1933 Wedell-Williams Racer - Balsa Flying Model Airplane Kit, 1/16, SF-47

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

$95

Older issue in the cardboard box with 'Cleveland World Famous Models' printed in silver. From the late 1930s/1940s. This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. The kit came from a long time collector of 1930s and 1940s models and is in exceptional condition. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and decals (if issued with the kit). The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called 'The Aviation Craze' that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business, called Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviations great Recruiter, Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Aurora Martin B-26 Marauder, 1/46, 371-259

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$375

Very rare first issue from the early 1950s. When Aurora moved to the West Hempstead plant, they planned a series of very large scale bombers. All kits released up to this time had been small. Aurora's instincts were correct, and the B-26, B-25 and B-29 were a big sales success. This box art was done by Jim Cox and was only used for about one year, making it very rare. The kit has never been started and is inventoried 100% complete with the original tissue paper, all parts, large clear stand, instructions and decals.
