Cleveland Globe Swift - 30 Inch Wingspan Balsa Flying Aircraft, IT-96

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

The kit came from a long time collector of 1930s and 1940s models. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, cut nose block, finished hardwood thrust button, finished main & tail wheels, factory carved propeller blank, metal stock, clear windshield meterial and more. The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called 'The Aviation Craze' that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business, called Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviations great Recruiter, Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Aurora Cessna 310, 1/62, 283-50

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc++

Sold

1963 issue from ex-Comet molds. The box has amazing color and gloss. Neatly molded with all recessed panel lines, clear side and front windows, tip tanks, rotating propellers, display stand and full pinstripe decals. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including decals and instructions. NOTE: the box displays better than the 'excellent++' grade but is rated as such because the is old tape residue on the bottom of the two long sides. Aurora had started a line of inexpensive 29 cent kits in about 1957. The line was a success, and it was expanded. The line grew again when Aurora purchased the Comet molds, as most of Comet's line was very small scale kits, many of them civil aircraft like this one. It appears that Aurora was encouraged by the sale of the ex-Comet civil aircraft, as it expanded the line with it's own molds in the early 1960s.

OKB-144 Tupolev Tu-104A - Aeroflot Civil (Held Several World Records In 1957) / Personal Aircraft of Marshal Zhukov / Soviet Air Force VIP Transport Chkalovskaya Airbase, 1/144, 101

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Includes paint guide and a large, extensive decal sheet for the three aircraft listed. Never started and inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. At the start of the 1950s, Aeroflot needed a new and modern airliner with better capacity and performance. Tupolev OKB developed a design that used the wings, engines, and tail surfaces of the Tu-16 but had a wider, pressurized fuselage that held 50 passengers. The prototype first flew on June 17, 1955 with the production aircraft flying on November 5, 1955. The Tu-104A was powered by two Mikulin AM-3 axial-flow turbojet engines and had good performance; by 1957 the aircraft held many civil world records. It was the second jet airliner to enter service with the DH Comet being first; however, when the Comet was grounded from 1956 to 1958, the Tu-104A was the only jet airliner in operation world-wide. The first aircraft had a crew of two with a radio operator as the third; however, this was soon permanently reduced to just a pilot and co-pilot. The aircraft was not easy to fly, which Tupolev knew ahead of time because of the experience with the Badger bomber. Tu-104 pilots first trained on the Il-28 bomber, then flew airmail in unarmed Tu-16 Badgers between Moscow and Sverdlovsk painted in Aeroflot colors . Pilots with previous Tu-16 experience transitioned into the Tu-104 with relative ease. The Tu-104 was considered difficult to fly, as it was heavy on controls and quite fast on final approach, and at low speeds displayed a tendency to stall, a feature common with highly swept wings. While the Tu-104 was used by Aeroflot through the 1960s and 1970s, the safety record was poor and 16 of 96 aircraft were lost in accidents. Many Tu-104 systems were unreliable, the aircraft was heavy and very unstable with poor control response and a tendency to Dutch roll. Poor design of the wings resulted in a propensity to stall with little or no warning. The aircraft had a dangerous tendency to pitch up violently before stalling and quickly enter an unrecoverable dive. Due to the fear of stalling the aircraft, crews would fly approaches well above the recommended approach speed, landing between 170–190 mph, which is over 30 mph higher than recommended. At least two accidents were attributed to the pitch-up phenomenon, prompting changes to the design of the aircraft and operating procedures; but the problem remained. Aeroflot retired the Tu-104 in March 1979 following a fatal accident at Moscow, but several aircraft were transferred to the Soviet military, which used them as staff transports and to train cosmonauts in zero gravity. After a military Tu-104 crash in February 1981 killed 50 people (of which 17 were senior army and naval staff), it was permanently removed from service.

Gagarin's flight was the first of 6 successful Vostok launches from the secret space center at Baikonur. Gagarin made one orbit in 108 minutes, which was enough to make him the first man in space. Titov followed in Vostok 2 and made 17 orbits. Other launches featured 4 mile passes in orbit, and Vostok 6 featured the first Woman Astronaut, Valentina Tereshkova. It is interesting that Vostok did not have attitude control for correct placement when re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The sphere was designed with the weight off-center, so it would automatically swing into position during the heat of reentry.
