Midwest Super Jabberwock - 33 Inch Wingspan Class C Cabin Competition for Free Flight or R/C Conversion, 401

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Purchased new on April 9, 1966 at Hobby House on 5240 Warrensville, Maple Heights, Cleveland, Ohio. Includes the original receipt! Cabin style 1949 record holding aircraft designed by Wally Simmers. These aircraft were common in the 1930s when the sport of free-flight model airplanes reached it's zenith. It was not uncommon for these models to fly for 45 minutes or more on rubber power alone. Many flew out of site, so it became common practice to write your name, address and phone number on the covering tissue. Quality kit includes printwood, strip wood, precarved prop, covering tissue and beautiful full size plans. Never started and inventoried complete.

AMT 1961 Mercury Comet 2 Door Sedan Promo, 1/25

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Original dealer promotional model in 'excellent+' condition. This one was a 'roller' from the factory and never had the friction drive. The body is straight with no warping. The black plastic has brilliant color and gloss and very little wear. The clear is 'excellent.' The tires are like new - this promo was never played with and was always a one-owner model (the collector actually kept a log of the day that he obtained or bought each one, and it was almost always in the year of issue. No parts are missing and it is original except that the chassis has been painted black and some of the fine trim (door handles, trim, etc) has been correctly and very neatly adult painted. The quality is good enough to pass for factory paint.

It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. Frog is considered the father of injection molded model kits. The Lines Brothers opened Frog in 1932, capitalizing on the fever caused by Lindberg's solo transatlantic flight. Almost overnight the western populations became 'Air-Minded', and anything aviation was in high demand. Frog created a quality line of stick and tissue rubber powered aircraft and gliders as well as innovative ready-to-fly rubber powered aircraft that required no assembly. The box even contained a built-in rubber motor winder and fuselage holder. Model airplane flight competitions were popular in Great Britain, and one category was 'Rise Off the Ground', or ROG. By changing this to 'Flies Right Off the Ground', the FROG name was born. In 1936 Frog created a line of injection molded plastic models, the first such kit line in the world (Hawk sold a line of injection molded aircraft models in 1934 but they were factory assembled and painted). Named 'Penguin' after the bird that does not fly, the kits were innovative beyond the means of production. At a time when models were simply built by wingspan, the Penguin line was a constant 1/72 scale. Furthermore, a large 1/72 Short S.30 Empire class flying boat contained a full interior and lights! A line of accessories such as AA guns, tractors, hanger, ambulance, sound locator, searchlights and lighting kits were quickly added to the line. WWII caused a pause in production. After the war the box color changed from silver to green, and Penguin kits were also marketed in the USA. Production ended in 1950. Frog quickly expanded and released the Red, Orange, Black, Green, Gold Token, Spin and Comet series as well as Trail Blazers and several others. It is noteworthy that while most manufacturers in the 1940s/50 were making toy-like models, Frog attempted to make very realistic models. For example, 'detailing' kits with excessively large rivets was once very popular. Frog ignored this trend and continued to mold aircraft with fine panel lines and no rivets. As a result, Frog kits can be built into very realistic replicas. Production ended in the late 1970s, but Frog molds are still in use around the world.

Pyro Gouda Dutch Man-O-War - 17th Century, B212-400

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Rare Pyro kit from 1967. Large scale - measures about 14 inches long when assembled. Very nicely molded and detailed. Features well over 250 parts, individually molded cannon, cradles and cannon hull hatches, separately molded fife rails with belaying pins, pre-molded rat lines, billowing sails, blocks and two photos for use in rigging the ship. The kit has never been started. The white parts are still in the factory sealed bag; the brown parts were not sealed and have been inventoried complete including instructions. Any kit of a Dutch 17th Century Man-o-War is rare - this may be the only injection molded kit ever made of this famous subject. The Gouda fought in the Anglo-Dutch Wars. She was built about 1636 and was commanded by Jan Egbertsz Ooms. The Gouda and other ships from Witte de With's fleet were lost in a storm in early November 1653. Pyro did not cut molds based on popularity, but usually by the historical significance of the subject. This was not a good injection-molded model business practice, but many collectors and builders are grateful today for these kits. Please read the articles about Pyro Kit History and Pyro's founder. Both articles are located on this website.
