Best 1931 Miller (Bowes) Special Indianapolis 500 Winner, 1/30

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

Very rare kit for the advanced collector. In the early 1950s Best Hobby Kits (Best Plastic Corporation of Brooklyn, NY) entered the infant USA plastic model kit market with a series of Indianapolis 500 winners. Six kits were issued - the 1920 Monroe Special, 1922 Murphy Special, 1931 Miller Special, 1935 Gilmore Special, 1940 Maserati Racer and 1953 Fuel Injection Special. The kits were priced correctly and featured 'Super Detailed' parts (for the time). It is unknown why the line failed to sell - it may have been distribution. Best was certainly not a large player in the business. The kit features real rubber Firestone racing tires, decals and some interior detail. The kit has not been started. All parts are still in the original 'krinkle' bag. Complete with decals and instructions.

Scale Flight North American NJ-1 - 20 inch Wingspan Dime Scale Flying Airplane, Dime

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: NM

Sold

Scale Flight Model Company in Bloomington, Indiana, USA was dedicated to releasing authentic reproductions of the finest "Dime Scale" flying model (stick and tissue) kits from the 1930s/40s. They are actually box scale, but as a general guideline, they usually had a wingspan of 16 inches and have simple and light construction. "Dime Scale" models are now a class flown in some competitions. Kit consists of contest grade printwood, contest quality strip wood, machine cut balsa propeller, the best Japanese tissue, wooden wheels, competition bushed nose plug, brass thrust washers, prop shaft, prop freewheeler, FAI rubber strip motor and a copy of a genuine dime scale plan that was used in the 1930s-1940s. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions.

Comet USS Gridley (DD380) Destroyer, K9

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Dated 1945. Almost everyone has heard of the Comet flying aircraft kits that boys and men built from stick and tissue, but few know that Comet had a line of ships also. Very nicely done wooden kit that measures 12 inches long when assembled. The hull had been very neatly factory machine cut to the overhead (beam) dimensions only. Also includes three sheets of printwood, mast and gun barrel material, a large bottle of Comet gray dope that is still good and full size plans. The plans are superior to most ship plans of the day with 3 hull sections, full size top and side drawings, illustrated instructions and a very large number of detail drawings. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions.

Comet North American P-51D Mustang - 18 inch Wingspan Scale Balsawood Flying Model, 3204-100

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

From the 1970s. Kit features traditional wood/tissue construction, detailed full size plans, printwood, wheels and canopy material, tissue and propeller. The kit has never been started. NOTE: missing stripwood and rubber motor. Otherwise inventoried with all other parts present. NOTE: the owner was a professional draftsman who drew some neat assembly guide lines on the plans. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Revell Bell P-39 Airacobra 'S' Kit, 1/45, H222-89

Molded in beautiful high-gloss olive drab and clear with the Revell 'Globe' stand. There has been no assembly. NOTE: this kit has minor, neat painting. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes 'excellent' condition decals and instructions. Richard Kishady did the famous painting for this kit and originally included German kill markings on the nose of the P-39. Very shortly after this, Revell began to export kits to Europe and many European countries had banned the swastika - so the box art was changed to Japanese kill markings, which is this issue.
