The DC-3 is directly responsible for bringing the US airlines into the modern transportation age. She pioneered regular cross-country travel and flew over 90% of the passenger miles in 1939, virtually taking over the airline business. The speed, comfort and economy of the DC-3 was responsible for doubling air traffic only two years after it went into service.
