Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Dated 1985 and from original Imai molds. This is the large scale, highly detailed version; there is great debate about the scale listed on the box, but I do know it is about 13 inches long when assembled. Features detailed instructions, numerous drawings, billowing sails, full rigging material, detailed rigging instructions (down to how to make certain knots) and 'lion' support stands. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes instructions.

C&S Graf Zeppelin - 29.5 Inches Long

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair-

Sold

Rare 1940s model of the world's most successful passenger rigid airship. Features standard stick-and-tissue construction, printed balsa bulkheads, pre-cut keel and stringer stock, thick balsa sheet for the four fins, blocks for the nose, engine and gondola and large, covering tissue, full size plans which include building instructions. Never started. The parts have been inventoried 100% complete and everything is still wrapped in the factory packing tissue. NOTE: there is bug damage to the plans, but it is light and does not affect construction. I have seen an add for this model in very old Model Airplane News magazines. C&S made quite a line of ridged airships including the Los Angeles (in two lengths), Graf Zeppelin (in two sizes), Hindenburg and perhaps others. The C&S boxes were thin cardboard and are almost always beat up and missing sections; this one is no exception.

Cleveland Playboy Senior Class C Gas Balsa Flying Model Airplane Kit, GP-5017

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

70 inch wingspan class 'C' gas free-flight model airplane. Cleveland entered the 1930s gas model market with the famous Playboy series. The design is so solid and popular that it is still a favorite at meets today (Like SAM - Society of Antique Modelers) where free-flight competitions are still held. Cleveland was late to introduce these kits (1939), but they wanted to ensure that the quality and performance was there. It appears that there were three aircraft in the Playboy line - the Baby, Junior and Senior. The model has not been started and is in exceptional condition. Whoever buys it will be the second owner; the first lives in town with me. The parts are inventoried 100% complete and includes covering tissue and 'excellent' never-used plans. Please NOTE: that there is some bug damage to the issue paper and very tiny bit to the edge of the plans. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called 'The Aviation Craze' that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business, called Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviations great Recruiter, Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Airfix Boeing 314 Pan Am Clipper - Dixie or BOAC Berwick, 1/144, 04172-6

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair

Sold

Very finely molded and well detailed. Includes decals for both aircraft listed. Never started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. In the 1930s Pan Am was a household word in the USA for their romantic foreign routes and the glamorous 'China Clippers' that crossed the Pacific Ocean, stopping at such ports as Wake Island. Pan Am's attention soon turned to the Atlantic. Since non-stop service would be needed, a new aircraft was designed. The Boeing 314 was chosen. This huge flying boat started flying the Atlantic mail in 1939 with a trip over 26 hours long. Before the war, the 314 fleet flew the Pacific, Atlantic and other routes. The airliner was a palace compared to the cramped jets and limited service of today. The flight deck compared to the bridge of a ship and housed 6 crew. It was connected to the passenger cabin by a spiral staircase. The luxurious cabins were divided into 5 standard compartments, each seating 10 passengers, a dining salon for 14, a special compartment for four and a deluxe bridal suite. 74 could be carried on day trips and 40 when sleeping quarters for all passengers was required. Chefs prepared gourmet meals while passengers lounged in deeply cushioned wicker chairs and enjoyed a grand view of the scenery from about 5,000 feet. The age of the Clippers ended shortly after WWII when land planes could operate at much higher speeds than the flying boats.
