Revell Convair Atlas - America's First Intercontinental Ballistic Missile - 'S' Issue, 1/110, H1822-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Dated 1958. Very rare ICBM and the first and only issue of this Revell 'S' kit representing the Atlas in ICBM configuration. Reissues are impossible because the the molds were altered to make the Mercury Atlas kit. Very highly detailed and molded in correct white, gray and bright yellow plastic. Features elevating missile support arms and hinged break-away supports, complete launching base, ramp and pad, missile truck and trailer that elevates 90 degrees to load missile and crew. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present. The decals are in exceptional 'near mint' condition with the slightest yellowing as the only flaw. The instructions are also 'near mint' and not even yellowed. The box has great color and gloss, four solid & original corners, no repairs and no fading. However, it is only graded 'very good' because there is corner wear, edge wear and other general moderate to light wear as shown. All four side panels display like the box top does. Shipping insurance is required for this kit. This model has a great history. Fresh on the heels of the initial "Missile Boom" in model kit sales, Revell quickly planned a large series of missile kits. In order to make them more interesting, any accessories that could be included were such as launchers, transports, cranes and crew. Spurred on by early success, Revell decided to create an expensive missile model by adding all the trimmings - a complete base with support equipment. The result was the Convair Atlas ICBM, which sold for the almost unheard of price of $1.98 in 1958. However, the missile kit sales bubble exploded almost right at that moment and inventory turnover dropped to almost zero just as fast. The Atlas and most other Revell, Aurora and Monogram missiles were dropped from the line up. The high price and nearly non-existent sales ensured the rarity of this kit, but there was more to come. For a long time, it looked like Revell had wasted a small fortune on this kit. But in a few short years the Atlas would carry the Mercury Capsule into space. Revell would dust off the molds, cut in the correct changes and issue a new kit, the Mercury Atlas "Everything Is Go!" model. This model was a success for many years but the mold modifications made any reissue of the original Atlas ICBM impossible. From my friend Stephen Payne, Major, USAF (Ret): The launch pad in both kits used Launch Complex - 14 (also known as Space Launch Complex-14 or "Slic-14") as their example. LC-14 was part of what was known as ICBM Row at Cape Canaveral and originally used to test the Atlas ICBM prior to being converted for the Mercury Space Program (starting with John Glenn's orbital mission). The yellow & white trailers seen here were the gaseous nitrogen tube bank trailers. The nitrogen trailer in both Atlas kits came from the accessories associated with the Revell Thor kit. Having spent 5 years working at the Cape, I passed this site numerous times. Unfortunately, time & the elements have resulted in the removal of all remnants of SLC-14. Only the memorial (with the associated time capsule) remains.

Sterling Northrop P-61 Black Widow - 37.5 inch Wingspan Flying Airplane, E-15

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Rare. Very high quality, scale kit designed for R/C, rubber power, gas or CO2, control line or non-flying super detail scale. Features quality die-cut balsa printwood and stripwood, diecut plywood, numerous crisp vacuform parts such as cowlings, cowl flap rings, spinners, wheels, turret and more, clear vacuform canopy and rear bubble in 'mint' condition, light-weight plastic and prop, hardware, rubber motor, fully formed wire landing gear, complete full color decals, covering tissue, superb full size plans that include building and flying instructions and conversion details for R/C and other forms of flight. Never started. The small parts are still in the factory sealed Sterling bag while the parts that were never sealed have been inventoried complete with a paperwork. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be deluxe kits as they were very complete.

Guillows De Havilland DH-4 - 27 Inch Wingspan RC / Gas / Rubber Flying Model, 205

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: NM

Sold

From about 1964 and in amazing 'near mint' condition. Large-scale, well detailed model can be flown rubber free flight, gas free flight, or converted to electric RC using modern servos and receivers. Features die cut balsa parts, rubber motor, plywood firewall, scale plastic wheels, plastic propeller, vacuform nose / machine guns / pilot busts, two big sheets of full color decals, covering tissue and excellent full size plans. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.

Comet Curtiss Jenny JN-4D - 34 inch Wingspan Rubber / Gas Control Line / RC Flying Balsa Aircraft, 3646

The kit has never been started. The small parts are still in the factory sealed clear bag, and the parts that were never factory sealed have been inventoried complete with all parts and includes insignia and instructions. Please NOTE that the box has bug damage as shown, mainly along the edges but everything inside the box is is fine. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Authentikit Vehicles 1903 Overland, 1/16

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

VERY rare kit from about 1950 and the only large-scale model of this subject. Very well detailed for that time and a rather deluxe model featuring machine cut hardwood parts (many cut to final shape), excellent plastic wheels, brass lanterns, stock brass, stock metal, hardwood dowels and more. With excellent full-size plans including patterns, detail drawings and full text instructions. Even includes a painting guide. The kit has never been started. Inventoried complete with all pieces and paperwork. Authentikit Vehicles was another maker of big 1/16 classic cars and competed with the bigger Hudson Miniatures and Fador. Authentikit simply called their models "Antique Automobile Kits" while Husdon Miniatures called theirs "Old Timers" and Fador called their line "Smallersters." Authentikit Vehicles was located in Coatesville, Pennsylvania and from what I can tell, it was a slightly superior kit to the more common Hudsons and Fadors. Authentikit advertised a "1902 Piece Motorette" on the instructions which could be purchased from a hobby shop or directly from the Pennsylvania office. So far these are the only two I have seen. The models are incredibly rare; to date only one Pierce and one Overland have traded hands publicly over the internet.
