This model was one of a small series of large scale sailing ships made by Aurora to appeal to the serious ship modeler. The kit has not been started. Life-Like Monitor and Merrimac Ironclads - ex-Pyro, B257-200

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

This is an early Life-Like issue as the box side says 'Manufactured Under License from Pyro Plastics Corp.' Also noteworthy is the Pyro kit number and box artwork. The Monitor is 10 inches long and the Merrimac is 11 inches long when built. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. These are not the Lindberg kits but are from the original Pyro molds and have superior detail to the Lindberg issues. These are the two American Civil war ships that spelled the end of the wooden ship age. In March of 1862, the Merrimac put to sea to raise the Union Blockade off the St. James. There she sank the Cumberland and Congress. The Monitor, the Union's only ironclad and the first turret ship, was rushed to the scene. The epic battle between the two iron-clad ships ended in a draw, with the Merrimac suffering a little more damage than the Monitor. The Merrimac was blown up to avoid capture; the Monitor sank in a gale in 1862.

Airfix Boeing 314 Pan Am Clipper - 'Dixie' or BOAC 'Berwick' T4 Sky King Issue, 1/144, 04172-6

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Unusual 'Skyking' box issue. Very nicely molded and detailed older kit that builds into a beautiful model. Has decals for both aircraft. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. In the 1930s Pan Am was a household word in the USA for their romantic foreign routes and the glamorous 'China Clippers' that crossed the Pacific Ocean, stopping at such ports as Wake Island. Pan Am's attention soon turned to the Atlantic. Since non-stop service would be needed, a new aircraft was designed. The Boeing 314 was chosen. This huge flying boat started flying the Atlantic mail in 1939 with a trip over 26 hours long. Before the war, the 314 fleet flew the Pacific, Atlantic and other routes. The airliner was a palace compared to the cramped jets and limited service of today. The flight deck compared to the bridge of a ship and housed 6 crew. It was connected to the passenger cabin by a spiral staircase. The luxurious cabins were divided into 5 standard compartments, each seating 10 passengers, a dining salon for 14, a special compartment for four and a deluxe bridal suite. 74 could be carried on day trips and 40 when sleeping quarters for all passengers was required. Chefs prepared gourmet meals while passengers lounged in deeply cushioned wicker chairs and enjoyed a grand view of the scenery from about 5,000 feet. The age of the Clippers ended shortly after WWII when land planes could operate at much higher speeds than the flying boats.

Pyro USS North Carolina Battleship - Table Top Navy, 1/1200, C385-50

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Small scale ship kit from the Table Top Navy series. Very nicely done kits for their time. Can be built full hull or waterline. Features propeller and shaft detail, separately molded turrets, stacks, many superstructure parts and more. The kit has never been started. NOTE: missing one catapult. A very good replacement can be made from stock styrene, which is included. It has been inventoried with all other parts and instructions. Many of the Pyro kits came from Eagle (then Eaglewall) molds in England. Eaglewall went out of business around 1962 and Pyro acquired at least some of the molds. Pyro reissued some of these kits in the mid 1960s with AJ Rudisill artwork. Evidently the line was successful, as Pyro then cut some of their own molds and expanded the series significantly. The earlier issues have the full color artwork and a three digit part number. Later issues have a 'B' or 'C' in front of the three digit kit number; some have simplified box art that is a modification of the original Rudisill paintings by painting out most of the background. Pyro issued these kits into the late 1960 when Life-Like took over the molds. Some were reissued by Life-Like.

She and her crew saw 30 years of incredible service.

Aurora Piper Apache, 1/64, 280-50

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Sold

1963 issue and still the only injection molded Apache kit. From ex-Comet molds. Features all recessed panel lines, clear windows, rotating propellers and color decals. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. NOTE: The decals and instruction have light stains and spotting. The decal transfers are not effect but the backing paper is. Aurora had started a line of inexpensive 29 cent kits in about 1957. The line was a success, and it was expanded. The line grew again when Aurora purchased the Comet molds, as most of Comet's line was very small scale kits, many of them civil aircraft like this one. It appears that Aurora was encouraged by the sale of the ex-Comet civil aircraft, as it expanded the line with it's own molds in the early 1960s.
