Still factory clear tape sealed. Superb, large-scale wooden ship kit measures 19.5 inches long when assembled. Features fully precarved solid hardwood hull, all basswood and metal construction, copper sheathing below the waterline, laser cut paddlewheel covers, brass and Britannia metal fittings and much more. The Harriett Lane was built in 1857 and named for President Buchanan's niece. The cutter was 180 feet long with a 30 foot beam and displacement was 670 tons. Armament consisted of 3-9 inch Dahlgrens and 1-30 lb Parrot Rifle. She was built at a time when steam was not fool-proof, so she is rigged for full sails. Harriett Lane served as the Presidential Yacht, the fired the first shot of the Civil War. She chased down blockade runners until January 1, 1863 when she was attacked by five Confederate Gun Boats and boarded. She was captured and renamed the Lavinia and was used as a blockade runner. Near the end of the war she caught fire at sea, and put into Havana Harbor. Federal forces took her again and rebuilt her in 1869 as the bark 'Elliot Ritchie'. She was abandoned at sea in 1884.

This was a well detailed model for that time featuring elevating guns and rotating turrets, movable control surfaces, retractable landing gear, crew members, rotating propellers and wheels, optional position crew entry door & ladder and more. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts present and includes decals and instructions. Decals are in amazing 'Near Mint' condition which is rare. Most likely from the late 1930s. StromBecker was famous for their line of precarved hardwood kits and they are considered the finest ever made. The carving is done to the final shape which makes them remarkably pre-fabricated. This one features a completely carved to shape fuselage, wings and horizontal & vertical stabilizers as well as color insignia, metal propellers, an envelope of powdered glue and high-quality instructions.
