Airfix RMS Queen Elizabeth Ocean Liner, 1/600, 06201-9

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc

Sold

Still factory sealed. Nicely molded full-hull model with good details. The famous Queen Elizabeth was the largest liner in the world when launched in 1938. She saw extensive service during WWII as a troop transport. After the war, she and the original Queen Mary formed the backbone of Cunard Atlantic Service in unparalleled luxury. Some customers favored the Queen Elizabeth for her modern lines and more modern interior fittings. She was supposed to be on display in the USA on the opposite shore of the Queen Mary, but buyers never materialized. While serving as a 'College Ship' she burned in Hong Kong Harbor where she was scrapped, but only after appearing in a James Bond film as a MI-6 hide-out.

Revell HMS Campbeltown (USS Buchanan) Destroyer, 1/240, H450

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Mint

Sold

Still factory sealed. 1971 issue. Large scale and highly detailed kit of the historic four-pipe destroyer. Originally the USS Buchanan Four-Piper, she was traded in the famous Lend-Lease program for the use of British bases. On March 8, 1942, the Campbeltown sailed up the Loire River. Her mission was to destroy the Normandie Drydock, a possible haven for the Tirpitz which was holed up on Norway at this time. The Campbeltown was disguised as a German warship and the bow was packed with 8500 lbs of high explosive depth charges. Under a RAF diversion, Campbeltown fought her way up the river and rammed the dock doors at full speed. Charges at the stern sank the back of the ship and she was wedged in the dock. During a German inspection 8 hours later, the charges went off, scattering parts of the ship up to one mile away. The dock was rendered useless to the Tirpitz, who now had to stay in Norway.

The parts that were never factory sealed (hull, wood and metal stock) have been inventoried complete. All of the fittings are still in the factory boxes and have never been removed. IWith plans. The Victory Ships were designed to replace the Liberty ships of WWII. 531 were ultimately built. They were larger, more powerful, faster, longer ranged and made their appearance in 1944. Steaming at 15 to 17 knots allowed them to be much more effective at evading U-boats. They were so successful that they became the basis of the US Merchant Marine after the war. Boucher was one of the earliest successful high-quality model companies in the USA. It was founded in 1905 Horace E. Boucher, a French-born naval architect employed by U.S. Navy Department and head of the Navy's model shop in Washington. Boucher kits were prized possessions at that time and naval museums displayed built versions - there are more than 40 Boucher kits in the Smithsonian alone. Boucher pioneered the mass production of cast metal fittings and selling full kits to the general public. Some credit him with starting the infant model industry in the United States that grew to prominence in the 1950s. At the very least, he took what had been the hobby of a tiny handful of skilled craftsman and made it into a hobby that almost anyone could enjoy.
