Joe Ott Stuka Ju-87 Battle Plane Kit - 32 Inch Wingspan Flying Wood Aircraft

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

Rare kit from the late 1930s. This model is one of Joe Ott's mid-range line in size and price. Large model features two big sheets of Ott-O-Formers, spars and stringers, thin, hardwood die-cut wing ribs, wooden propeller, a small factory paper bag of parts including fully formed wheels, thrust button and metal propeller shaft), colorful tissue paper (the color of the aircraft on the box art) and excellent full size plans. The kit has never been started. Inventoried complete with all parts and plans. The four sides of the box as well as the two large end flaps are intact but NOTE: the box is missing the tiny end flaps and is fairly flat as shown. The box and plans do not mention any insignia sheet and there is not one present.

Monogram Speedee-Bilt Curtiss P-40F Warhawk - Flying Scale Model Airplane, G15-100

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: NM

Sold

Rare second issue from 1957 in a two-piece hardbox. This model is in amazing investment-grade 'Near Mint' condition inside and out for the advanced Monogram collector. This is a completely pre-fabricated multi-media kit featuring pre-colored and die cut balsa wood, precarved balsa, finished Monofoil wing, plastic detail parts (such as cowl, three bladed prop and spinner, pilot bust, exhaust, wheels and more), clear vacuform canopy (in mint condition and not yellowed), sandpaper, tissue covering and rubber motor. Designed for rubber free flight or scale display. Never started and as new inside. Inventoried 100% complete with all wood and plastic parts, decals and instructions. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. The original "Speedee-Bilt" kits were in one-piece two-color boxes. In the early 1950s, shortly before plastic kits were available, Monogram changed to the 'hardbox' with a lithographic slick glued to the top. Speedee-Bilt kits contained die cut and pre painted wooden parts, completely formed airfoil wings, carved wheels and numerous plastic details like cowling, pilot, missiles, prop and whatever was required. Assembly was by detailed full size plans and instructions. Monogram carried the Speedee-Bilt line for several years past it's prime and the advent of plastic kits, a testimony to the quality and popularity.

Cleveland Mile Fliers Flemish Defiance - 32 Inch Wingspan Balsa Flying Model Aircraft, C-2

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Early World War II stick-and-tissue flying model aircraft. This was one of the six Cleveland "C" Tribute Series in the Mile Fliers Outdoor Contest Model series. This model, 'Flemish Defiance', is a tribute to the brave Belgian Dutch. The other kits were a tribute to Czechoslovakia, Holland, Scandinavia, Poland and Austria. Features balsa printwood, pre-cut stringers and spars, covering tissue, thrust bearing, full size plans and more. Because they were wartime kits, often the rubber, cement and music wire were not present as these were critical war materials. The model has not been started. It has been inventoried and NOTE: missing propeller blank. Otherwise complete with all other parts and plans. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called 'The Aviation Craze' that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business, called Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviations great Recruiter, Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Maircraft TWO Piper Cub Trainer - Solid Wood Model Airplane, 1/48, S-2

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

SALE! Includes two complete kits and one plan. Maircraft was originally founded in the early or mid 1930s by Gordon Christoph and went by the name Aircraft Model Company. The company produced a typical line of solid 'profile cut' kits that required the usual high talent levels for carving and finishing. A former Comet Model Airplane & Supply Co. salesman, Jack Mair, bought the company in the early 1940s and renamed it Maircraft. This company was one of the handful of solid kit producers who issued models in a consistent 1/48 scale during the 1930s and 1940s (others included Hawk and Dyna-Model). This lead to one of the most desirable and rare model kits ever produced in the USA - the wood/plastic 1/48 United DC-3 model issued immediately after World War 2. Other than the P-61 and a few other Maircraft offerings, most were simple kits that sold for the low price of about 35 cents and gave the owners many hours of pleasurable work. This kit features a full size plan, 3D cut fuselage, profile cut wings and tail feathers and finished wheels. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions.
