Revell 1908 Buick 10 Rumble Highway Pioneers, 1/32, H40

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

1952 early issue molded in bright red plastic. This is from the issues produced by Gowland & Gowland as it carries their 'balloon' logo on the side. These issues feature the same 5 car artwork on every box; the only way to identify the contents was an ink-stamped name on the box ends. This kit has never been started. Inventoried complete with all pieces present and includes instructions. These kits have a fascinating history. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream and never made the top 10 list of boys activities. Spurred on by the nation-wide aviation craze in the 1920s, many became modelers and built flying or static wooden models of airplanes, ships, trains, automotive and other subjects. Basic kits existed, but many of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s when the Gowland & Gowland/Revell Highway Pioneers became the sales sensation of the year. Demand was so great that the factories could not keep up and almost overnight 'model building' was mainstream. The phenomenon of the 'Highway Pioneers' kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles fit the bill: they could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real cars. The success of the Highway Pioneers lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the late 1950s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys...and many adult males too!

Revell 1903 Model A Ford Highway Pioneers, 1/32, H36

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

1952 first issue in the 'Series One' yellow box. This issue has no part number on the box and it also has the 'Parents' Magazine Seal' on the box sides; this must be the very first appearance of this seal on any model kit. Also, there is no Gowland & Gowland 'balloon' logo on the side. These issues feature the same 5 car artwork on every box; the only way to identify the contents was an ink-stamped name on the box ends. Molded in gloss yellow plastic. This kit has never been started. The small parts are still factory sealed in a small wax bag; the larger parts were never sealed and have been inventoried complete. Includes instructions. These kits have a fascinating history. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream and never made the top 10 list of boys activities. Revell Action Miniatures Four Pack 1909 Stanley Steamer / Grandpaws Pride 1911 Ford / Packard / 1903 Cadillac - Pre Highway Pioneers, 1/32

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

Incredibly rare and from about 1951. This set predates the Highway Pioneers and is the 'Action Toy' version from the original molds. Includes four cars, each in the special 'Action Miniatures' boxes which are in turn held together by a special 'Revell Action Miniatures' decorative sleeve. Each model is factory painted and assembled. The condition of the models is as follows: Cadillac - correct early molds with the chassis ramp for action function; missing lantern and pull-rod action assembly. 1911 Ford - has the correct ramp for action function; I believe it is complete except for the pull-rod action assembly. Steamer - driver and hat are present but not glued in. Includes action assembly and correct chassis for it. Missing one piece: tiller. I have included a built up Steamer that has the tiller intact. Packard - missing two lanterns and action rod assembly. Correct ramp chassis. The inner boxes are all original and in 'good' to 'very good' condition with edge tears on the open frame as shown but otherwise they display very well. The outer sleeve is in 'very good' condition and is complete with no repairs and very good color. It is easy to forget that the birth of the modern USA model kit industry was an accident. Before the plastic kit age, Revell, Gowland & Gowland, Aurora and others were completely involved in making toys and an occasional injection molding contract job. Toys were the way to make money, but it was risky business and hit-or-miss. J.P. Gowland was a very creative and innovative toy company with many patents and they often sold their ideas to other companies or marketed them through another manufacturer. Gowland created many other action toys such as Champ, Chu-Chu the Maxwell and many more. What would become the Highway Pioneers began as the 'Revell Action Miniatures.' The simple car model was factory assembled and airbrushed, then a 'Controlit' knob and flexible metal control line was attached to the car, braced at the lower radiator and then hooked to the rear differential, which was mounted on a pivot. When you moved the lever, the rear end jumped down, throwing the back of the car into the air and somewhat forward. Well, someone at Revell or Gowland got the very bright idea that perhaps these would sell without the Controlit attachment and in parts that had to be assembled! It was a smashing success that swept the entire country...thus the Highway Pioneers and the modern US Plastic Modeling industry was born. When you look at your early Highway Pioneers models, you can spot the older 'Action Miniature' molds because these is a round acceptor molded into the lower part of the radiator, which braced the front of the Controlit assembly. The hinged rear end was unique to the Action Miniatures and was eliminated for the Highway Pioneers. This example is in excellent condition as shown with the original box. The Controlit action feature works perfectly. These were very short lived because of the wild success of their non-assembled, non-action version, the Highway Pioneers. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys.

AMT 1958 Pontiac Bonneville 2 Door Hardtop Built Up, 1/25, 6PKHT-139

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

Built and painted model from the very rare original issue. The box is not present. This is an ideal candidate for restoration. It is missing the convertible top boot, steering wheel and custom shifter; otherwise it appears to be complete. The model has been painted and several of the original AMT custom parts have been installed such as the hood louvers and long, custom fender skirts. It was not adult built - the built quality, while sufficient, is more along the lines of a young teenager.
