Ideal Aeroplane & Supply US Coast Guard Cutter Campbell (USCG) - 22 Inch Long Wooden Model Kit

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

Great model from the famous Ideal Aeroplane & Supply Company, which was founded in 1911. This example is in very rare near-investment grade condition. The box is exceptional with four solid, original corners, near perfect labels and very little wear. The only flaws are very light general wear and the box top is slightly concave. This example is dated 1940 on the plans. I have seen this kit built, and it is beautiful and nicely detailed. Measures 22 inches when completed. Features a very nicely pre-carved hull, a good sized bag of metal, wood and other many small parts and fittings, wooden stock as required (still held together by the original rubber band), the original sandpaper, three large sheets of high quality printed wood that are still held together by the original rubber band, a color flag sheet and very nicely drawn plans in 'near mint' condition with numerous templates, details and perspectives. This kit is almost untouched inside, other than for inspection. Never started. The small parts are still factory sealed. The parts not sealed have been inventoried complete with the plans and color flag sheet.

The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals, flag sheet and instructions. The Ward was a Wickes-class 1247-ton destroyer launched in 1918 . After serving as a station ship during the first trans-Atlantic flights of NC-1, NC-3 and NC-4 in 1919, she came back to the Pacific and was decommissioned there in July 1921. In 1920 the ship received the hull number DD-139. On the morning of December 7, 1941, the Ward was on patrol just outside Pearl Harbor. She spotted and sank Japanese Midget Submarine and fired the first US shots of WWII. The Ward saw extensive activity through the war as a transport in most of the major battle areas of the Pacific as a fast transport. During the Leyte operations she took a Kamikaze hit amidship and the crew had to abandon her. The destroyer USS O'Brien had to sink the Ward with gunfire. The Commanding Officer of the O'Brien was William W. Outerbridge, who had been in command of Ward off Pearl Harbor on that fateful day. The date that she was sunk was December 7th, 1944, three years to the day of her opening shots.
