The group represented in this kit, VMSB-224, was the first US Marine group to fly the Helldiver in combat. The kit has never been started. Marvel Ryan STM-2 US Coast Guard Battle Planes Of America Series - Solid Wood Aircraft, 1/32

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair+

Sold

Rare solid model from 1942. At that time, their were 'fliers' and 'solids.' 'Fliers' were notoriously off-scale and lacked detail so they would fly well. 'Solids' were true scale models that were solid wood and designed only to be scale miniatures (they did not fly). This kit has a worn box but inside it is like new - the parts are still wrapped in the factory tissue paper. But I can tell that the model includes printwood, wood stock and blocks for the fuselage and floats as well as full size plans with templates, construction & detail notes and USCG insignia on the plans as well as a painting guide! Never started and complete. The wingspan is 12 inches, which works out to 1/32 scale. Marvel Mfg. Company was located in Seaford, Long Island, New York and had an extensive line of solid aircraft, wooden ships, army tanks and more. Just as a small example, the following are advertised on the back of this larger-scale solid kit: Grumman JRF-2, Mariner PBM-1, Bell YFM-1, P-38, P-40, Baltimore, Ryan STM-2, Curtiss AT-9, Douglas A-20A, Republic Guardsman, Grumman Skyrocket and Douglas 8A-5.

Master Modelcraft Supply Co Douglas A-20A Boston / Havoc, 1/48

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair++

Sold

From about 1943 - certainly a wartime issue from the 'We are in a fight to WIN!' drawing on the instructions and an urging to buy war bonds. This is a deluxe solid wood model in big quarter scale. Features 2-D cut fuselage, nacelles, tail surfaces and two balsa wings, two cast metal three-blade propellers, fully formed wheels, wood stock as necessary, celluloid for canopies with factory printed window frames, full color RAF insignia and very large full-size plans that include stabilizer and wing dihedral gauges, cross sections, aircraft description and spec and even text instructions. Never started and complete. Please NOTE that this kit may have come with glue and dope but they are not present. Master Modelcraft Supply Company made wooden model aircraft and ships and listed their address as N.Y. 66, New York during the early 1950s.

Comet Bell Pursuit XP-39 Airacobra, 1/72

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Poor

Sold

Very rare and early kit, most likely from 1938. This appears to be the prototype XP-39 with the side radiator scoops. Kit features fuselage block, printwood wings, horizontal and vertical stabilizer, side radiators, nose wheel, and nose strut, while the factory small paper bag contains 2 fully finished main gear wheels, fully formed metal main gear struts, balsa stock and a propeller. The plans features three view drawings, detail and assembly drawings, fuselage and wing templates, paint guide ("Entire Model Is Silver") and cut out insignia for the tail flash, national markings and US ARMY. The plans are complete but have some short to medium edge and fold tears in three places. The box is the one-piece type and is missing the small and main flap on one end. They are present on the opposite end. There is tearing on the sides and bottom. I have graded it 'poor' but it actually displays better.

Hudson Miniatures 1911 Mercer Raceabout Old Timers, 1/16

Wood and Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Very well detailed large 1/16 kit from 1949. Features plastic wheels, grill, steering wheel, lights and other accessories and wooden and metal main parts. Although all of Hudson's 1/16 kits have excellent detail, this one has even more detail than usual thanks to Hudson's engineers having access to the actual car owned by Mr. J. Fetterolf of Buckingham, PA. This kit has never been started. Some small parts are still in the internally sealed factory bag and the other parts have been been inventoried complete with all parts, plans and instructions. Hudson Miniatures created a very popular line of automobile kits in a constant 1/16 scale shortly after WWII. The kits sold very well...so well that you could argue that Gowland & Gowland borrowed Hudson's subject matter for their ground-breaking 'Highway Pioneers.' The Hudson Miniatures 'Old Timers' even spawned a line of imitators, with Fador's 'Smallster' being one of the better in quality. Sales did drop on the appearance and popularity of the much smaller (and less accurate) Gowland/Revell 'Highway Pioneers' in 1951. When the all-injection molded Gowland kits proved not to be a passing fad, Hudson quickly planned and released his own all-plastic, small-scale competition called 'Lil' Old Timers Quickie Kits.' The kits were of excellent quality, but it was too little too late. Additionally, sales of the excellent wooden kits faltered further in the next few years with the introduction of accurate, 1/24 and 1/32 all-plastic cars in the mid 1950s. This forced Hudson to discontinue the wood kits and the plastic line was sold to Revell and subsequently re-released. Today, these excellent, big 1/16 kits are often the only model available of these early automobiles. The 1911 Mercer Raceabout is one of the rarest American cars. The Mercer was built in Trenton, NJ and powered by a 30 hp T head 4 cylinder engine. Displacement was 300.7 cubic inches and the car had a wet clutch four speed transmission. The car weighed 2,500 lbs and cost $2600 and could do 112 mph. The Mercer was perhaps the most famous sports car of the time. It was rugged, handled very well and had excellent performance.
