This turbojet missiles, known as the Regulus, was capable of delivering a nuclear warhead at speeds exceeding an contemporary carrier based fighter at a far great range. Regulus entered service a year later; at first it was launched from an aircraft carrier and controlled by a variety of Navy Jet fighters. By the end of 1952 it was being launched by deck catapults and a year after that from highly modified submarines. Eventually they were even operated from cruisers. By the time they retired from service, a second variant has been developed with retractable landing gear for use as a recoverable, radio-controlled target drone under the designation KDU-1. By 1966 the last of the Regulus Is were gone, only a few being retained for use as static displays.
