Hawk Howard Ike Air Racer - One Piece Box Issue 1949, 1/48, 602

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Rare early one piece box issue from the 1949. Hawk was a very innovative model company that went into business in the 1920s with model aircraft made from wood with metal detail parts. Hawk also made ship and train models in this fashion. It is thought that the first injection molded aircraft kits in the United States were made by Varney in 1946, but they did not catch on quickly. Hawk was always an innovative and quality-driven company, and they took a gamble on injection molded kit well before they were popular. As early as 1946 they issued the 1/48 Curtiss R3C-1 with wheels. This may have been the first plastic airplane kit in the USA. Like Varney's Fleet Sub and PT-17, they were shunned by hobby dealers. Hawk persisted with the 'Evolution of the Jet' gift set in 1948. In 1948, they also issued the four racer kits - the Supermarine S6B, Gee-Bee, Howard Ike and Laird all in Acetate. The F-84G and Constellation were also issued but were the first Hawk kits molded in polystyrene. All were in the two-tone one-piece flip box or straight one piece box with opening ends like this one. This is the 1949 polystyrene issue. This model is molded in the correct glossy white with a unique early stand. The model was issued with instructions but did not come with decals. The instructions tell you that 'All license numbers are gold outlined in black'. The kit has never been started. The contents have been inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions.

Monogram Speedee-Bilt Spad Pursuit - Flying Scale Model Airplane, G8-100

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Hardbox issue from 1957. For the advanced Monogram collector. Early, completely pre-fabricated multi-media kit featuring pre-colored and die cut balsa wood, precarved balsa, finished Monofoil wing, plastic detail parts (such as cowl and prop) and rubber motor. Designed for rubber free flight or Co2 engine power. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all wood and plastic parts, decals and instructions/plans. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. The original "Speedee-Bilt" kits were in one-piece two-color boxes. In the early 1950s, shortly before plastic kits were available, Monogram changed to the 'hardbox' with a lithographic slick glued to the top. Speedee-Bilt kits contained die cut and pre painted wooden parts, completely formed airfoil wings, carved wheels and numerous plastic details like cowling, pilot, missiles, prop and whatever was required. Assembly was by detailed full size plans and instructions. Monogram carried the Speedee-Bilt line for several years past it's prime and the advent of plastic kits, a testimony to the quality and popularity.
