Monogram Speedee Bilt B-25 Mitchell - Wood and Plastic Model Aircraft, H-1

This example has never been started. The yellow, clear and red black plastic parts are still in the factory sealed red boxes. The other parts were never sealed and have been inventoried 100% complete with decals (in amazing 'near mint' condition), sand paper, plans and instruction book (both also in 'near mint' condition). It still has all of the correct internal packing as shown. Please note that this kit must be shipped insured. This is the first large-scale non-flying scale Speedee-Bilt model, the B-25 Mitchell. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. Monogram, however, wanted to make true scale models that could still be assembled easily. So they created the four large and highly detailed non-flying scale Speedee-Bilt bombers - the B-25, B-26, B-24 and B-17. The kits were a tremendous success and sold well in the early to mid 1950s.

She chased down blockade runners until January 1, 1863 when she was attacked by five Confederate Gun Boats and boarded. She was captured and renamed the Lavinia and was used as a blockade runner. Near the end of the war she caught fire at sea, and put into Havana Harbor. Federal forces took her again and rebuilt her in 1869 as the bark 'Elliot Ritchie'. She was abandoned at sea in 1884.

Lindberg Lumber Schooner Forester, 852-60

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

As the West Coast lumber trade became big business in late 1800s, the industry needed a way to move vast amounts of timber. The answer was lumber schooners, built of the same Douglas fir as the planks they carried. These ships had shallow drafts for crossing coastal bars, uncluttered deck arrangements for ease of loading and were especially handy for maneuvering into the tiny, Northern California ports. The C.A. Thayer was one such schooner, built in 1895 and preserved today as a museum ship in San Francisco. This is the 1969 issue hardbox issue of this small but nicely detailed ship. It measures about 8 inches long when assembled and includes vacuformed sails. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions. The actual lumber schooner Forester was 217 feet long, 680 ton, 32 feet wide, drew 13.6 feet of water with a displacement of 1,812.5 tons. She cost $60,000 to build and netted between $12,000 and $19,000 per trip for her investors during the heyday of the trade. As of 2006 you could see see her wreckage along the Martinez shoreline.
