Every few decades an automobile is produced that becomes an world-leading classic in beauty and performance. In the spring of 1934 at the Berlin Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz introduced a new series of high speed touring cars. The engine was the super charged 8 cylinder Mercedes, and the model name was 500K; 500 for the engine's 5 liter displacement and K for "Kompressor" or super charger. One of the three 500k cars was to become an immediate classic -the Singelfingen-Bodied 500K Special Sports Roadster. The model is molded in tan, black, clear and a large tree of chrome-plated parts. Features steerable wheels, removable top, operating rumble seat, removable boot, highly detailed engine and full chassis, double spare tires, detailed interior, opening hood, chrome spoked wheels and tonneau cover. Never started. Factory sealed bag or 100% inventoried with all parts/decals and instructions present.

Rare first issue with minimal surface detail and molded in the non-metallic medium blue and clear plastic, with a clear two-piece display stand with the early rectangle-shaped base. The second and all later issues had greatly increased rivet detail and were molded in a metallic blue plastic. The kit has never been started. I believe that the Matson Line Hawaiian Pilot originally started life as the Navy USS Burleigh C-3 Transport. After the was she became the Oceanic lines SS Sonoma (#2). On July 14, 1953, Hawaiian Pilot collided with SS Jacob Luckenbach (another C-3 freighter, ex-Sea Robin), off San Francisco. Luckenbach sank in 30 minutes; the crew was safely transferred to Hawaiian Pilot and there was no loss of life.
