Unknown Imperator Four Screw Ocean Liner of the Hamburg American Line, 1/200, 312-326

Cardstock Paper Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

During the rush for the biggest and best ocean liners in the early 1900, Dr. Albert Ballin, the director of HAPAG, knew that he could not compete with the Mauritania and Lusitania for the Blu Riband. But he knew that he could make the largest and most luxurious ships afloat. The result were the three German Superliners for the Hamburg-Amerika Line. The first was Imperator. The launch of the Imperator took place on May 23, 1912 from Vulcan Shipyards. She was the largest ship in the world in length and tonnage, far more than the Titanic. After fitting out, the sleek and beautiful ship entered service. She did sail before World War One, but was in New York when the hostilities broke out. The Germans decided that it would be safe to keep her there. This ultimately cost them the ship. When the US entered the war, they seized the ship. After the hostilities, they renamed it USS Imperator and used it to ferry troops back across the Atlantic. Ultimately, the Imperator was given to the British to replace the lost Cunard Liner Lusitania. The Imperator was renamed Berengaria by Cunard. Ironically, the Berengaria’s new running mates were Mauretania and the Aquitania, her previous peace-time foes. The three ships provided splendid and popular service - they soon became known as ’The Big Three’. These were the glory days of the North Atlantic Ocean Liners. But things changed when the 1931 Stock Market crash hit. Many people simply did not have enough money. The Berengaria cut prices and went on "Booze Cruises" for thirsty Americans during Prohibition. She became known as the "Bargain-Area". Furthermore, her age was showing. She remained Cunard flagship till 1934, when White Star and Cunard combined. At this point she sailed briefly with another of Ballin's 3 Giants, the Majestic, which was originally built as her sister ship Bismarck. Majestic, being slightly larger and in better condition, became flagship. When the Queen Mary was built, there was little use for the Berengaria and her expensive upkeep issues. She was scrapped in 1938. This is a all card-stock model kit and is a reproduction of the original model. All sheets have been reprinted on matching 90lb cardstock (as per the original) using the highest photographic reproduction possible. The model is 1/200 scale and would be just over 4 feet (1.2 meters) when assembled. I believe the original model was from 1911-1912 as she has the original configuration for only 32 life boats; after the Titanic disaster in April of 1912 she was modified to carry 80 lifeboats. The original model was made in Germany and was drawn by Bruno Holz. The drawings are of high quality and in full color. It can be built as a waterline model or full hull. There are 15 original sheets to the model. When the sheets were copied, great care was taken to make sure that no parts were cut off; as a result, you get many extra parts. All parts are labeled as to their number and that number is repeated again where the part should be glued. Factory notes on construction are written in German, French and English. There are no formal instruction sheet.

Miniature Masterpieces The State Coach of England - Circa 1760, 1/48, K500-69

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Rare early 1950s original issue. Molded in red. Like all Miniature Masterpieces kits, this one is very finely engraved and molded with excellent detail. The model includes detailed instructions (rare for the early 1950s) and a wonderful history of this State Coach which was built for King George III. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. 'Miniature Masterpieces' was formed through an alliance of Lew Glasser (Revell) and Steve Adams (Adams Action Models) in 1953. Although having the appearance of an independent company, the firm was run by Revell down to the prototypes being made at the Revell plant. However, there was no evidence of the parent company on the surface. The State Coach of England was the first kit, issued in 1953. More kits of excellent quality followed. Revell completely took over the line in 1954, making the one-year original issues very rare.

Renwal Lt. Morton T. Seligman's Curtiss F11C-2 Goshawk - (F11C2), 1/48, 282-149

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+++

Sold

I purchased this model from the collector who bought it brand new in the late 1950s/early 1960s. He opened the kit but left the plastic intact, thus keeping the box in mint, factory new condition This is one of Renewal's famous Aeroskin kits, and a rare large one in 1/48. Features markings for the aircraft of "High Hat Squadron", VF-1B commander Seligman aboard the USS Saratoga in the early 1930s. The model has an injection molded inner structure of ribs and stringers like a real aircraft, then the modeler covers it with provided authentic pre-colored Aeroskin fabric. There is no painting needed as elaborate finishes are printed directly on the Aeroskin covering. This results a very realistic and colorful model. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, Aeroskin and instructions.

Renwal USS Compass Island Experimental Ballistic Navigational Ship, 1/500, S606-129

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Very rare. In the 1950s, the US Navy began a program called the "Fleet Ballistic Missile". Since missiles of the day had short range, it made sense to sail Navy ship within range and fire missiles from then. Nothing had ever been done like this before, so a special research ship was converted from a "Mariner" class cargo vessel. The USS Compass Island was the US Navy's experimental forerunner of ballistic missile-launching vessels. She was commissioned at the New York naval Shipyard on December 3, 1956. Displacing 17,000 tons, the Compass Island was designed to assist in the development of SINS, or the Ship Inertial Navigational System. Missiles can only hit targets if they know exactly where they were launched from. This early system was a distant relative of GPS, the Global Positioning System. The ship carried the usual crew in addition to many scientists. She was equipped with Regulus I missiles for testing as well as many other instruments from research on navigation done at the Instrumentation Laboratory and MIT. The Compass Island was also equipped with the Sperry Gyroscope Company's new Gyrofin Ship Stabilizer. These are included in the model and move as the real ones did to keep the Compass Island from rolling. Each fin provided 3,000 foot-tons of lift and reduced this motion by 90%. This kit is highly detailed, very finely molded and includes the Regulus I missiles and launcher. The kit has not been started and has been inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.

Lindberg is a company with a fascinating history The original 'Lindberg Line' stretches back to the 1930s when Paul Lindberg drew plans for famous modeling magazines and marketed his balsa wood 'stick and tissue' by urging dealers to carry the '...Complete Lindberg Line'. After the war, Lindberg and Olsen had a strong hand in early United States injection molded kit development. Please see the article located on this website about early USA plastic kit manufacturers.
