Hand-Made U-Control (Control Line) Aircraft - Never Flown

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

This dated from the early to mid 1960s and was in a collection of incredibly well build stick & tissue and solid models. This is not store bought but is a home-made flying model. It has a 24 inch wingspan and is 18 inches long. The model is very, very durable. I do not know what it is made of, but it's so tough that you can't poke a hole in it with your finger. It is not plastic - I tend to think it has a balsa fuselage and balsa or sheeted wings. The wing and stabilizer have a beautiful airfoil, and the fuselage is perfectly symmetrical. The gas tank is built into the fuselage and has brass fill and vent tubes. The engine mount is carved out of solid wood and even includes three of four mounting screws and washers. The elevator controls are metal and work perfectly. The landing gear is strong spring steel and the wheels spin freely. They are held in place on the front and back by soldered brass washers. The paint job was done by hand and is fantastic. If you install and engine, she is ready to fly or display.

Early World War II kit. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot’s English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh’s 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called “The Aviation Craze” that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh’s flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream – to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world’s longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business – Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called ‘Aviation’s great Recruiter – Cleveland’s Ed Packard’ by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Pyro 1909 Lozier Briarcliff, 1/32, C455-125

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair+

Sold

1967 Pyro issue from original molds. In the early to mid 1960s the Pyro company chose many of it's kit subjects based more on historical significance than popularity. Luckily for us, Pyro not only made these kits but did an excellent job for the time. The Lozier was a large four cylinder T-Head rated at 45 horsepower. The wheelbase was 124 inches and she rode on huge 36 x 4.5 tires. This Pyro car model is based on a car that was owned by Thomas J Lester of Chagrin Falls, Ohio that Pyro engineers and designers had access to. The model includes rubber tires, brass plated parts, colored injection molded parts and clear parts. Features detailed chassis, complete motor and interior and a removable hood or 'bonnet'. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including instructions.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc-

1953 issue, the first year for the 'Series Three' Highway Pioneers. The box is excellent, and the inside has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and instructions. Molded in deep burgundy plastic. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys.

Entex De Havilland No.1 (DH-1) 1910 / Antoinette 1908 Monoplane / Voisin Farman 1908 Biplane 'The Pioneers of the Air' (Ex-Taimei), 1/72, 8448

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG-

Sold

Rare and highly detailed kits from original Taimei molds. These are unique and accurate kits. The original internal frame structure and details of the aircraft is built from injection molded plastic. When complete, it is covered with a very strong fabric which is included. The result is a very realistic aircraft. Never started. Factory sealed bags complete with instructions and covering material. Fuji also released this kit from ex-Taimei molds, and since Entex lists the kits as being made in Japan (and uses Fuji's box art), it is likely that Fuji molded the kits for Entex. Some of these molds found their way to Renwal, where they may have been the inspiration for the famous Aeroskin series.
