Revell Documented Arizona Factory Display Owned By Esther Ross, Who Christened The USS Arizona

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$3800

An incredibly rare, documented, one-of-a-kind piece of history in amazing investment-grade collector condition. For the very advanced collector of unique military history and model kits. This Revell Factory Model was originally owned by Mrs. Esther Ross Wassell, who earlier was Miss Esther Ross who christened the USS Arizona in New York on June 19, 1915. She went on to play a very key role in the creation of the USS Arizona Memorial. Thanks to newspaper reports, we know that her father, William Ross, was a prominent pharmacist in Prescott, Arizona. He and his friends convinced Gov. Hunt to choose his daughter from the other 100 applicants anxious to do the honors. It turned out to be a wise choice reasons no one could foresee. Miss Ross took the task of launching the world's most powerful battleship very seriously. She practiced her duties every day after school for months, smashing syrup bottles full of water against a fence behind the house. Miss Ross was popular and well respected in Prescott. Even the Associated Press reported that she "was one of the prettiest girls in the state." A special train took Gov. Hunt, Miss Ross, her family and others to New York for the event. Although the applause for the then unpopular Gov. Hunt, the cheering for Miss Ross was "heard for miles." Page 1 of the Prescott Journal Miner, June 20th, 1915, reported that at the Brooklyn Navy Yard Miss Ross cried "I dub thee Arizona," and "Not a hitch or sign of accident marred the success of the launching." "This is the proudest moment of my life," she stated, "and I am most intensely gratified at the magnificent demonstration that my friends and the city of Prescott has given me." Sometime after the launching ceremony, Miss Ross married Mr. Arthur Wassell and became Mrs. Esther Ross Wassell. She saw the horror of World War II and the disaster of the Arizona touched her deeply. After the war, she joined the drive to create a memorial over the ship to the 1177 sailors entombed in her. She joined the Arizona Memorial Committee which raised all the funds needed to build the Arizona Memorial. She served on the staff and toured the USA giving numerous media interviews and key speeches for the fund raising. Out of gratitude, the USS Arizona Memorial Committee ordered a special Revell Factory Display USS Arizona for her. It came with two specially affixed small Fleet Reserve and Arizona Committee signs (shown in the photos) on the right side; these special markings are only found on the rare "appreciation gift" factory displays from the Arizona Memorial Committee members to important fundraisers. The model was shipped to her in Los Angeles. You can see the original "Arizona Memorial Committee" mailing label that has her full name and address, documenting that it was her model. Esther treasured this gift and kept it in remarkable and very complete condition. Included is the original shipping box in "very good++" condition with all the original shipping tape, all the original internal special cardboard packing material, the model ship in exceptional condition, the cardboard display base(complete but with small tears and very light wear as shown), the colorful backdrop (with wear and slight tears as shown, missing one lower tab), the original display assembly instructions and even an original fund raising card from the Arizona memorial campaign. This display, box and all materials were always in a climate controlled environment. The colors on the cardboard display are in stunning, factory-new condition. The instructions for the display are 'excellent.' The ship is 100% complete and the factory paint is in exceptional condition. Even the factory rigging and all flags are intact. There is very little dust on the ship; it appears to be in 'not displayed' condition; but I know it was displayed for a short time because of the small tears and one tab on the cardboard display backdrop (see photos), which were probably due to putting it up and taking it down. I have only found one repair; the jackstaff broke and was neatly repaired at some point. The factory shipping box still has all the original tape and very little wear for that age. The original Arizona Memorial Committee shipping label is in 'very good' shape. Due to it being on the bottom of the shipping box, it does have some wear, but all the writing can be clearly read with slight magnification. This piece passed to Esther's daughter, who gave it to a friend who then gave it to another friend. The later friend is wife to an OMK customer, who sold me the model. This kit must be shipped insured and I may require it shipped by special courier.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$119

1961 issue hardbox with the dramatic Jo Kotula artwork that made these kits so famous and collectible. Nicely molded small scale kit with full main landing gear, outrigger gear, clear canopy and auxiliary gas tanks on the outboard wings. Molded in the correct gloss silver and clear with the clear 'Triangle World' stand. The kit has never been started. Top Flite Douglas D-558-2 Skyrocket SUPERFORM - Flying Balsa Aircraft For Jetex or Catapult- (D5582), C2-100

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$125

Very rare, 1950s model kit that is very highly prefabricated. The SUPERFORM kits were a few steps above the Jigtime models and priced so also. As a result, few sold and Top Flite discontinued the line after only a few years. Features completely formed wood fuselage shells, factory-painted wood parts, fully formed one-piece (each) wings, fully formed tail feathers, numerous detailed plastic parts including exhaust rockets, intakes, nose, pilot and all gear struts, fully formed wheels, hardware, rubber bands, two sheets of colorful decals, excellent illustrated building and flying instructions and more. There are full instructions for Jetex installation or using a rubber band launcher. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The only other advertised SUPERFORM kit listed is the F-86D Sabre Jet with a 13" wingspan.

ITC 1956 1957 Lincoln Continental Mark II - (Ideal Toy Company Continental), 1/25, 3712

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$425

Very rare, especially in complete, never started condition like this example. The model may be rarer than the actual car; less than 10 kits have traded hands publically (on-line) in a decade. The Continental MkII was a hand-built car of the highest quality. It was the most expensive American car made at that time and was certainly a style leader. About 3,000 of them were produced; Ford said it lost $1000 on each one. But they did prove that a world-class car rivaling Rolls-Royce could be made in America. This model is molded in black (body), red (interior/chassis and other details), chrome plate, clear, metal axles and rubber tires. It has never been assembled and is 100% complete with all parts and instructions.

Aurora Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, 1/270, 494-49

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

$125

Rare first issue with one-year only rectangular logo. Dramatic Jo Kotula box art with 1956 date. This is a very nice kit for that time, featuring raised and recessed panel lines detail, clear canopy, full landing gear and gear doors, outrigger gear and doors, wing tip tanks, decals and the correct clear rectangle-base early Aurora stand, which is also shown on the instructions. Molded in the correct gloss silver and clear. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. It is interesting to note that this kit is not a reissue of the Comet molds - this kit is original to Aurora. The Aurora kit is significantly larger that the Comet issue and varies in a great many details.

Italeri DC-130 with Teledyne Ryan Q2C or 147 NX Firebee Drones - US Navy or USAF, 1/48, 820

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$179

Big 1/48 scale model with a very large 33 inch wingspan and four drones & all related C-130 Drone Carrier modifications. Features great detail with full cockpit and flight deck, complete cargo hold interior, opening cargo doors, optional position crew door and stairs and much more. Has decals for USN VC-3, North Island, California 1971 and USAF 11th TAC Drone Squadron 355th TFW, Davis Monthan AFB 1971. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present.

Megow Ranger Class B Gas Model - 44 Inch Wingspan Early Free Flight Aircraft, E-22

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$175

Very, very rare. From the late 1930s or pre-war 40s. Fred Megow once stated that they lost money on the big gas models and sold very few; they were done for status only. This is a one owner kit; the box top and tray are in good condition given the age of the model; that stain on the litho lowers the overall grade to 'good'. The box top and bottom are 100% intact, never repaired and have great corners. Inside, the kit has never been touched. The small parts are still in the sealed paper envelope and it appears that the plans have never been unfolded. Includes quality printwood, stock balsa, factory cut stringers and spars (still held in a bundle together with the factory rubber bands), balsa and hardwood stock cut to general shape, fully formed wooden wheels, fully formed wire landing gear struts, sealed hardware packet and more. It is complete with all parts and plans. I do not see any covering tissue, but some models did not come with it (and it may be in the never opened plans).

Aurora Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, 1/270, 494-49

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc++

$145

Very rare and even rarer in this condition. First issue and with the one-year only rectangular logo. Dramatic Jo Kotula box art with 1956 date. The box is the finest I have seen. It has like-new color and gloss, four solid corners, no repairs, no tape or tape marks, no tags or tag marks, no fading, and no tear or missing litho. The only flaws are the light edge and corner wear shown at the bottom right and other (even lighter) shelf wear that probably not even visible in the photo. Molded in correct silver and clear with correct rectangular clear stand. A nice kit for that time, it features full centerline landing gear and outrigger struts and gear doors as well as clear cockpit canopy, outboard slipper fuel tanks, display stand and decals. It has the correct early rectangle-base clear Aurora stand, which is also shown on the instructions. Molded in the correct gloss silver and clear. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Instructions are mint and the decals are 'near mint.' It is interesting to note that this is not a reissue of the Comet molds - the two models are not even close to the same size or scale. This kit is original to Aurora, was made before Aurora acquired the Comet molds and also varies in a great many details. It appears that Aurora never even re-issued the Comet B-52, probably because they had a superior model already in the same low price range.

Aurora P-51 Mustang Screwdriver Issue, 1/27, 377-350

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$210

1969 hardbox issue. This kit was designed as a gas powered flying model. However, Aurora discontinued the gas powered line very shortly after introduction due to returns and liability issues. Since the mold investment was already made, Aurora marketed these kits as large scale static models. For example, the 1/32 scale B-25 was issued in Gas U-Control and then static - but the P-51 may have only been issued in static. Never started. The small parts are still in the factory sealed clear bag. The other parts have been inventoried 100% complete including decals and instructions.

Still factory sealed but the seal has split as shown. Very highly detailed, large scale model that features full engine including ignition wiring, detailed cockpit, opening canopy, full gun bays cannon, ammunition and removable access covers, rotating prop & wheels and much more. Includes a large decal sheet for at least 5 aircraft and usually includes a color painting guide. (I cannot confirm because the kit is factory sealed).

MPC Schwinn 10 Speed Continental Bicycle, 1/8, 1-1480-250
