Monogram F-51D (P-51D) Mustang - Action Model, 1/32, PA77-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Sold

First issue of this classic 'Action Model'. Canopy opens and closes to show highly detailed cockpit. Tiny levers under the wings drop 2 bombs. Knob on the bottom rotates and extends/retracts main gear and tail wheel; all gear doors including tail wheel open and close automatically with the gear. Not only do these features sound great, but they work. My built kit is over 35 years old and functions like new! Great detail. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present. NOTE: there are some modeling notes neatly written on one page of the instructions. This kit has an interesting history. This kit has an interesting history. In 1961, Monogram introduced the 1/32 scale Phantom Mustang. This was a very ambitious project. The kit was transparent, highly detailed and included two electric motors. One motor raised and lowered the main gear and tail wheel while the other spun the prop. Two small levers on the base dropped bombs from the wings. It was molded in clear, silver, black, red and zinc chromate green. Although successful, the kit was expensive to produce and Monogram charged a hefty retail price of $4.98. As a way to create more revenue from the molds, Monogram cleverly created this kit - using some of the same molds as the Phantom Mustang. The silver parts tree was completely re-cut and does not match the Phantom version. The red stand, gears and motorizing features were simply left out and the model molded in solid colors. The gear retraction/extension features was retained, but not motorized. On the new silver parts tree they added a small knob (placed on the bottom of the wing) and the same for the bomb dropping mechanism. This lowered the price to $1.98 and this additional revenue hopefully helped pay down the original mold costs.

Marx The Sea Witch Clipper Ship, 1/96

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Original issue of the rare and beautiful kit. Measures 33 inches long when assembled as has over 500 parts. Excellent detail throughout. The world's largest toy manufacture, Louis Marx, spared no expense in this early 1950s entry into the growing field of plastic models. The model claims to the first time that anyone could build a museum-quality large ship at home. The claim is correct since the kit pre-dates the Revell 1/96 Cutty Sark. Prior to this model, only wooden kits were available for sailing ship enthusiasts. The wooden models required a great deal time, skill and craftsmanship. A great deal of thought went into the design of this large and complicated kit to make it easier to construct. The most complicated painting areas, the hull and deck were dealt with in an exceptional fashion. The hull was factory assembled and painted. The plastic is black, and the under the waterline is factory painted copper. This paint is in excellent condition. The three main decks were tin lithographed, which means the decks are completely finished with all the detail of wood; boards are of different shades and divided by perfect, thin black lines. These decks are in near mint condition with minimal wear. The rest of the parts are molded in three colors of plastic to further minimize painting. The vacuformed billowing sails are in 'very good' condition and do have some wear. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the factory bags. Includes the booklet about the Clipper Ships, different rigging materials, decals and more. The instructions are a work of art themselves. They are a very large and well-produced affair with numerous photos of the assembled kit, enlarged drawings, detailing tips and standing/running rigging instructions. A beautiful kit in excellent condition. Another of Marx's rare kits is the large Chris Craft Constellation. It also has fantastic detail but also suffered from an initial high price which resulted in poor sales for both kits. NOTE: some issues of this kit came with crew members; this one does not have them mentioned in the instructions or on the box and does not have them.

Very nice kit of the famous borax wagons that would cross 162 miles of Death Valley with 20 mules in the days before the railroad. There was not a single house or other sign of habitation along the route. One leg was 60 miles with no water. Maircraft Erco Ercoupe - 'Little Gems' Series Scale Solid Wooden Aircraft Kit, 1/72, G-4

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc++

Sold

These kits are good candidates for the first line of 1/72 model aircraft produced in the USA. Although not as old as the Frog injection molded 1/72 scale kits, these solid wood and metal models were made in the late 1930s or 1940s to 1/6 inch scale - which is commonly known today as exactly 1/72 scale. Maircraft announced kits G-1 through G-6 with 'more to come', but it is likely that no others were produced as Maircraft was out of business by 1948. The highpoint of the Little Gems series was the plans and instructions. Wonderfully illustrated and written, they show step by step how to carve and contour the model and how to finish it. Includes excellent three view full size drawings and templates. The kit consists of balsa wood with printed outlines for all parts and a metal parts sheet with wheels and propeller. This kit has never been started and is complete with all parts and plans/instructions. Maircraft was originally founded in the early or mid 1930s by Gordon Christoph and went by the name Aircraft Model Company. The company produced a typical line of solid 'profile cut' kits that required the usual high talent levels for carving and finishing. A former Comet Model Airplane & Supply Co. salesman, Jack Mair, bought the company in the early 1940s and renamed it Maircraft. This company was one of the handful of solid kit producers who issued models in a consistent 1/48 scale during the 1930s and 1940s (others included Hawk and Dyna-Model), and eventually even made these 1/72 scale series 'Little Gems'.
