Ideal Aeroplane & Supply CV-7 USS Wasp Aircraft Carrier - 18.5 Inch Long Wooden Ship Kit

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Very rare kit from 1941. Measured 18.5 inches long when assembled. Nicely designed kit that includes a very unusual detailed hanger deck assembly. Issued shortly before the war, the model was not reissued after the war since the Wasp was lost off Guadalcanal by what is likely the most damaging submarine torpedo salvo in history. Includes completely pre-molded and shaped wood-material hull in excellent, solid condition, 5 sheets of cleanly done printwood, wood stock in many shapes and sizes, a sealed fittings packet (I can tell that it contains at least the oval funnel) and two packs of Casco Glue. Features excellent full size plans and instructions. The plans show numerous detail view of the ships substructure and a detailed view of the hanger deck, flight deck with pre-war markings and island. Never started. Factory sealed fittings bag with the other parts inventoried complete with instructions.

Box art is by the famous Jo Kotula who did 1930s covers for the magazine 'Model Airplane News' and later the Aurora box art of the late 1950s. Air Lines kits are all Frog molds that the Lines Brothers imported to the USA between 1964-1966. The kits, decals and instructions were made in England, then imported to the USA where Testors created the boxes with the colorful trading cards on the back. There are one or two trading cards on each box which show the boxart but not the advertising/logo. Some kits contain a Testors color painting guide also, but it is not specific to any model.

Revell SMS Seeadler (Sea Eagle) German WWI Commerce Raider, 1/232, H331-300

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc-

Sold

Rare 1966 kit of a fantastic subject - the famous WWI sailing commerce raider of Count Felix Von Luckner. The SMS Seeadler was a unique WWI raider in that it was not designed to elude the British blockade and break out to sea...it was designed to pass right through the blockade within full view of the British before attacking allied shipping around the world. No detail was overlooked in the Seeadler's preparation, right down to a Norwegian-speaking crew. The plan went perfectly - and the Seeadler passed inspection at the British Blockade. Her non-threatening appearance helped her in an active and colorful raiding career that nearly went around the world. I highly recommend reading any of several books that you can find about this ship. Von Luckner himself became quite a celebrity for his exciting exploits. Very well detailed kit. Never started. All parts are still in the factory sealed bag. Instructions and all other paperwork is present and still sealed in the factory bag.

Cleveland Grumman TBF-1 Avenger Balsa Flying Model Airplane Kit, 1/16, SF-93

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. The kit came from a long time collector of 1930s and 1940s models and is in exceptional condition. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and decals (if issued with the kit). The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriots English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindberghs 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called The Aviation Craze that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindberghs flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the worlds longest running single-owner (77 years) model airplane supply business Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called Aviations great Recruiter Clevelands Ed Packard by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.
