Hobby-Time Republic F-84F Thunderstreak - Bagged, 1/68, 1103

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Rare and still in the factory sealed bag with header and full color backing card behind the kit parts. This is a very cleanly molded model from the early 1960s that features raised surface detail, full landing gear, underwing rockets, clear canopy, pilot bust, display stand and full color decals in 'excellent' condition. The name 'Hobby-Time' was the toy division of Western Coil & Electrical Company of Racine WI. They began kit production in the late 1940s with a line of prefabricated solid balsa wood scale aircraft and moved into plastic kits in the early 1960s. They also made a large-scale line of vacuform scale flying models such as the F-100 and F3H-1. The entire line was good sized and there were also many gift sets. Kit production ended around 1968/69.

ITC N156 Jet Freedom Fighter - (F-5 Prototype / N-156), 1/50, 37622-98

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

Very rare kit from 1960 that was released shortly before ITC discontinued all plastic kit production. This is the only very-near 1/48 scale kit of the original prototype for the F-5, which was designated N156 by Northrop. It is a nicely molded kit for that time, featuring moving elevators, retractable landing gear, wing-tip missiles that actually 'fire', underwing bombs with remote release, pilot figure and Northrop prototype decals. The decals certainly do match some of the prototype photos and the box art is either very close to or accurate to one of the several prototype paint schemes. The kit has never been started. The clear and metal parts are still in the internal factory sealed bag. All other parts are inventoried complete and it includes decals and instructions. NOTE: instructions are from the 'Ringo' issue. This kit found fame not only as rare subject matter, but also co-staring on the ITC TV commercial for the toy "Robot Commando." In this video, the child orders the Robot into action against a cornucopia of dangerous elements. One such threat is an airborne N156, clearly called up on to eliminate this menace to society (and ironically his injection-molded brethren). Unfortunately (for the world of Toy Aerospace, Robot Commando vanquishes his vile foe with one shot; we won't even guess how many takes were required for that scene. Fortunately the real N156 had a much longer service life than the robot, serving numerous countries for many decades as the F-5 Freedom Fighter and even longer as the T-38 Talon.

Carl Goldberg was a gifted designer of model aircraft, and his career spanned the evolution of flying models. His designs and number of titles won in competition at the Nationals is legendary. His first competition was the 1928 Nationals, where he received honorable mention. By 1934 he won the indoor Nats and in 1935 he opened a Hobby Shop, among the first in the nation (the first one was probably opened by Cleveland Models Ed Packard). Awards came quickly. He wrote articles for Model Airplane News, and was Comet's top designer from 1939 till 1945. After Comet, he worked with Mike Schlesinger and Sid Axelrod on what eventually became Top-Flite Models. In 1955 he founded Carl Goldberg Models and released a still-popular line of scale, rubber, gas, glider and RC models. Needless to say, Goldberg's models are of the highest quality.

NOTE: this kit has very minor and 'professional' assembly to the cowl halves. There is no other assembly. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present. The M-1 holds two very special places in American Aviation History. First, it is the first production monoplane and played a key role in early airmail. In the 1920s, Government contracts for flying airmail on a $/mile basis was about the only thing keeping commercial aviation alive and growing. In 1926, the M-1 was the first aircraft to fly with PAT, Pacific Air Transport. PAT linked Seattle to LA with mail contracts. The other unique item is that this was the Ryan NYPs (Lindbergh's aircraft) father. When Lindy visited Ryan in 1927, he flew the M-1. He requested an airplane that was similar but larger - thus the NYP was born and aviation history was made.
