William H Low Co Rumsey Light City Service Hook and LadderTruck Circa 1900 - Wilo Line Fire Truck, 1/24, CL120

Multimedia Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Very, very rare. Likely from the 1940s. William H Low Co., of Braintree Mass., issued the 'Wilo Line' which included a superb series of antique commercial firefighting equipment. The scale is given as 1/2" and the finished wagon is over 14 inches long with the ladders, and even bigger with the 7" front carriage bar. The kits were very advanced for the time and shared many of the pre-fabrication methods of Hudson Miniatures. This kit is based on the Rumsey prototype first made just before 1900. Features plastic injection molded spoke wheels, precut large hardwood parts, fully formed hardwood ladder frames with pre-cut ladder rungs, extinguishers and more, smaller parts including a great many fully cut or carved wood ones, metal stock as needed, sandpaper, complete instructions with detailed plans and full text step-by-step guide and even a big photo of the actual prototype. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including instructions/plans. The kits in this line include CH110 Combination Hose Wagon, FC15 Chemical and Reel Carts, F16 Horses in the same scale, CL120 Hook And Ladder, CL120 (again) City Service Ladder (a completely different kit from the previous one), FC180 Combination Chemical Wagon, FH130 Hose Wagon, FP7 Amoskeag Steamer, CR110 Service Hose Reel, FL10 Aerial Ladder, F18 Chemical Engine and more. In most cases they are the only kits in existence of these historic vehicles. Bill Low did design at least one 'non-fire truck' kit in his Will-O-Line - a Conestoga Wagon, advertised as being 1/24 scale, kit #B14 for $2.85 listed as "This is another Museum Piece by Bill Low." After seeing these fire truck kits, I do not doubt that.

Revell HMS Campbeltown (USS Buchanan) Destroyer, 1/240, 2502

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Advent issue. Large scale and highly detailed kit of the historic four-pipe destroyer. On March 8, 1942, the Campbeltown sailed up the Loire River. Her mission was to destroy the Normandie Drydock, a possible haven for the Tirpitz which was holed up on Norway at this time. The Campbeltown was disguised as a German warship and the bow was packed with 8500 lbs of high explosive depth charges. Under a RAF diversion, Campbeltown fought her way up the river and rammed the dock doors at full speed. Charges at the stern sank the back of the ship and she was wedged in the dock. During a German inspection 8 hours later, the charges went off, scattering parts of the ship up to one mile away. The dock was rendered useless to the Tirpitz, who now had to stay in Norway. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals, flagsheet and instructions.

Frog Canberra Mk.8 / 12 Low Level Bomber South African or RAF, 1/72, F203

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed VG

Sold

Still factory sealed. Final Frog logo from the late 1970s. Has parts and decals for either version- RAF No.88 Sqn, Wildenrath Germany 1960 or South African Air Force No.12 Sqn, Waterkloof, 1969. Frog is considered the father of injection molded model kits. The Lines Brothers opened Frog in 1932, capitalizing on the fever caused by Lindberg's solo transatlantic flight. Almost overnight the western populations became 'Air-Minded', and anything aviation was in high demand. Frog created a quality line of stick and tissue rubber powered aircraft and gliders as well as innovative ready-to-fly rubber powered aircraft that required no assembly. The box even contained a built-in rubber motor winder and fuselage holder. Model airplane flight competitions were popular in Great Britain, and one category was 'Rise Off the Ground', or ROG. By changing this to 'Flies Right Off the Ground', the FROG name was born. In 1936 Frog created a line of injection molded plastic models, the first such kit line in the world (Hawk sold a line of injection molded aircraft models in 1934 but they were factory assembled and painted). Named 'Penguin' after the bird that does not fly, the kits were innovative beyond the means of production. At a time when models were simply built by wingspan, the Penguin line was a constant 1/72 scale. Furthermore, a large 1/72 Short S.30 Empire class flying boat contained a full interior and lights! A line of accessories such as AA guns, tractors, hanger, ambulance, sound locator, searchlights and lighting kits were quickly added to the line. WWII caused a pause in production. After the war the box color changed from silver to green, and Penguin kits were also marketed in the USA. Production ended in 1950. Frog quickly expanded and released the Red, Blue, Orange, Black, Green, Gold Token, Spin and Comet series as well as Trail Blazers and several others. It is noteworthy that while most manufacturers in the 1940s/50 were making toy-like models, Frog attempted to make very realistic models. For example, 'detailing' kits with excessively large rivets was once very popular. Frog ignored this trend and continued to mold aircraft with fine panel lines and no rivets. As a result, Frog kits can be built into very realistic replicas. Production ended in the late 1970s, but Frog molds are still in use around the world.

Lindberg is a company with a fascinating history The original 'Lindberg Line' stretches back to the 1930s when Paul Lindberg drew plans for famous modeling magazines and marketed his balsa wood 'stick and tissue' by urging dealers to carry the '...Complete Lindberg Line'. After the war, Lindberg and Olsen had a strong hand in early United States injection molded kit development. Please see the article located on this website about early USA plastic kit manufacturers.
