This tug boat was approved by the American navy on 22 May 1941 and given the name "YT146 HOGA". It was then posted with the 14th navy station at Pearl Harbor. After only six months in service, the HOGA was put to a far greater test than had been expected, when Pearl Harbor was attacked on 7 December 194l. The HOGA fought without break for 48 hours, extinguishing fires, tugging bombed warships and rescuing seamen. Today the HOGA is the only vessel still in existence from the time of the Japanese attack.

Sterling 2-32 Schweizer Sailplane - 42.75 Inch Wingspan For Tow Line or R/C, A27

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed NM

Sold

Still factory sealed. From the late 1960s/early 1970s. Very nicely produced stick-and-tissue glider than is designed for tow line or radio control. Features quality die-cut balsa parts, stripwood and spars, a perfect-condition clear vac canopy, factory-finished hard-wood nose cone, finished wheel, a large, full color decal sheet that includes full side strips as shown, coving tissue and excellent full size plans with detailed instructions. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be 'deluxe' as they had the action features and were much nicer than most other kits of this type.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed VG+

Sold

Still factory sealed but the seal has many splits. Well detailed, large scale full-hull model measures 15.75 inches long when assembled. The Ward was a Wickes-class 1247-ton destroyer launched in 1918 . After serving as a station ship during the first trans-Atlantic flights of NC-1, NC-3 and NC-4 in 1919, she came back to the Pacific and was decommissioned there in July 1921. In 1920 the ship received the hull number DD-139. On the morning of December 7, 1941, the Ward was on patrol just outside Pearl Harbor. She spotted and sank Japanese Midget Submarine and fired the first US shots of WWII. The Ward saw extensive activity through the war as a transport in most of the major battle areas of the Pacific as a fast transport. During the Leyte operations she took a Kamikaze hit amidship and the crew had to abandon her. The destroyer USS O'Brien had to sink the Ward with gunfire. The Commanding Officer of the O'Brien was William W. Outerbridge, who had been in command of Ward off Pearl Harbor on that fateful day. The date that she was sunk was December 7th, 1944, three years to the day of her opening shots.
