Pyro Saint Louis French Man-O-War 1626, C210-300

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Sold

Rare Pyro kit from the late 1960s. Large scale - measures about 14 inches long when assembled. Nicely molded and detailed and features over 200 parts with individually molded cannon, cradles and cannon hull hatches, numerous deck fittings, pre-molded rat lines, billowing sails, blocks and an actual built-up kit photo for use in rigging the ship. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including instructions. In 1642 when Richelieu came to power in France, the country did not have a single ship that could compare with the English and Dutch Men-O-War. To rectify this, Richelieu purchased a few ships from Holland. His engineers studied these then built the Saint Louis. The ship had two gun decks and about 60 guns. She was rigged with a modern spiritsail, topsail and mizzen topsail. Pyro did not cut molds based on popularity, but usually by the historical significance of the subject. This was not a good injection-molded model business practice, but many collectors and builders are grateful today for these kits.

Guillows Fairchild 24 - 25 inch Wingspan - R/C Control Line or Rubber Powered Kit, 701-250

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Purchased new on October 17, 1967 in Northern Ohio. Large and well detailed stick and tissue kit. Can be flown rubber free flight, gas free flight, or converted to electric RC using modern small and light servos and receivers. Features quality die-cut balsa parts, stripwood and spars, plastic nose and cheek cowls, balanced prop and power combination for long flights, decals, covering tissue, scale wheels, full size plans, detailed instructions and more. The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.

Cleveland 1933 Wedell-Williams Racer - Balsa Flying Aircraft, 1/16, SF-47

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. The kit came from a long time collector of 1930s and 1940s models and is in exceptional condition. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and decals (if issued with the kit). The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called 'The Aviation Craze' that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business, called Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviations great Recruiter, Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

She was built in Oakland, CA by the Gorham Engineering Company and her home port was San Francisco. The company was located at 3rd and Berry, but later moved to the Sante Fe dock area known as China Basin. The Jim Wilder was commercially operated for 70 years as a towing and passenger tug; she was most commonly used to tow barges and other tugs that had broken down. The Jim Wilder was built with a double-planked pine hull, bolted together with bent oak frames. Like most tugs, she was refitted over the years with many types of engines. In 1911 her engine was a 110 hp 3 cylinder S.F. standard gas, and in 1925 she had a 125 hp 3 cylinder Enterprise Diesel. In 1946 she was refitted with a pair of 115 hp Caterpillar D-17000 diesels hooked by chain drive to a single shaft. Speed at tow was 9.5 knots. In 1971 most wooden tugs were taken off the Bay due to age and size of newer vessels. The Jim Wilder No.2 was decommissioned by Steven Speidacchi. He left her hull 100% intact, but took her iron out. In 1989, Steven determined that the Jim Wilder No 2 was still restorable, the hull is still intact and some of her original iron has been recovered, all efforts are being made to keep her stable, so that in the future, she can be restored to her original condition. If you have any updates on the restoration progress, please email me.
