In the 1930s Pan Am was a household word in the USA for their romantic foreign routes and the glamorous 'China Clippers' that crossed the Pacific Ocean, stopping at such ports as Wake Island. Pan Am's attention soon turned to the Atlantic. Since non-stop service would be needed, a new aircraft was designed. The Boeing 314 was chosen. This huge flying boat started flying the Atlantic mail in 1939 with a trip over 26 hours long. Before the war, the 314 fleet flew the Pacific, Atlantic and other routes. The airliner was a palace compared to the cramped jets and limited service of today. The flight deck compared to the bridge of a ship and housed 6 crew. It was connected to the passenger cabin by a spiral staircase. The luxurious cabins were divided into 5 standard compartments, each seating 10 passengers, a dining salon for 14, a special compartment for four and a deluxe bridal suite. 74 could be carried on day trips and 40 when sleeping quarters for all passengers was required. Chefs prepared gourmet meals while passengers lounged in deeply cushioned wicker chairs and enjoyed a grand view of the scenery from about 5,000 feet. The age of the Clippers ended shortly after WWII when land planes could operate at much higher speeds than the flying boats.

Marvel Ryan STM-2 US Coast Guard Battle Planes Of America Series - Solid Wood Aircraft, 1/32

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair+

Sold

Rare solid model from 1942. At that time, their were 'fliers' and 'solids.' 'Fliers' were notoriously off-scale and lacked detail so they would fly well. 'Solids' were true scale models that were solid wood and designed only to be scale miniatures (they did not fly). This kit has a worn box but inside it is like new - the parts are still wrapped in the factory tissue paper. But I can tell that the model includes printwood, wood stock and blocks for the fuselage and floats as well as full size plans with templates, construction & detail notes and USCG insignia on the plans as well as a painting guide! Never started and complete. The wingspan is 12 inches, which works out to 1/32 scale. Marvel Mfg. Company was located in Seaford, Long Island, New York and had an extensive line of solid aircraft, wooden ships, army tanks and more. Just as a small example, the following are advertised on the back of this larger-scale solid kit: Grumman JRF-2, Mariner PBM-1, Bell YFM-1, P-38, P-40, Baltimore, Ryan STM-2, Curtiss AT-9, Douglas A-20A, Republic Guardsman, Grumman Skyrocket and Douglas 8A-5.

Master Modelcraft Supply Co Douglas A-20A Boston / Havoc, 1/48

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair++

Sold

From about 1943 - certainly a wartime issue from the 'We are in a fight to WIN!' drawing on the instructions and an urging to buy war bonds. This is a deluxe solid wood model in big quarter scale. Features 2-D cut fuselage, nacelles, tail surfaces and two balsa wings, two cast metal three-blade propellers, fully formed wheels, wood stock as necessary, celluloid for canopies with factory printed window frames, full color RAF insignia and very large full-size plans that include stabilizer and wing dihedral gauges, cross sections, aircraft description and spec and even text instructions. Never started and complete. Please NOTE that this kit may have come with glue and dope but they are not present. Master Modelcraft Supply Company made wooden model aircraft and ships and listed their address as N.Y. 66, New York during the early 1950s.

Comet Bell Pursuit XP-39 Airacobra, 1/72

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Poor

Sold

Very rare and early kit, most likely from 1938. This appears to be the prototype XP-39 with the side radiator scoops. Kit features fuselage block, printwood wings, horizontal and vertical stabilizer, side radiators, nose wheel, and nose strut, while the factory small paper bag contains 2 fully finished main gear wheels, fully formed metal main gear struts, balsa stock and a propeller. The plans features three view drawings, detail and assembly drawings, fuselage and wing templates, paint guide ("Entire Model Is Silver") and cut out insignia for the tail flash, national markings and US ARMY. The plans are complete but have some short to medium edge and fold tears in three places. The box is the one-piece type and is missing the small and main flap on one end. They are present on the opposite end. There is tearing on the sides and bottom. I have graded it 'poor' but it actually displays better.
