Monogram Speedee-Bilt Curtiss P-40F Warhawk Flying Scale Model Airplane, G15-100

Second issue from 1957 in a two-piece hardbox. For the advanced Monogram collector. Completely pre-fabricated multi-media kit featuring pre-colored and die cut balsa wood, precarved balsa, finished Monofoil wing, plastic detail parts (such as cowl, three bladed prop and spinner, pilot bust, exhaust, wheels and more), clear vacuform canopy, sandpaper, tissue covering and rubber motor. Designed for rubber free flight or scale display. Never started and as new inside. Inventoried 100% complete with all wood and plastic parts, decals and instructions/plans. The small parts are still factory bag sealed. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. The original "Speedee-Bilt" kits were in one-piece two-color boxes. In the early 1950s, shortly before plastic kits were available, Monogram changed to the 'hardbox' with a lithographic slick glued to the top. Speedee-Bilt kits contained die cut and pre painted wooden parts, completely formed airfoil wings, carved wheels and numerous plastic details like cowling, pilot, missiles, prop and whatever was required. Assembly was by detailed full size plans and instructions. Monogram carried the Speedee-Bilt line for several years past it's prime and the advent of plastic kits, a testimony to the quality and popularity.

Includes formed wire landing gear and prop shaft, 8 inch true-pitch propeller, red plastic light-weight spinner, wooden wheels, very colorful decals, formed leading edges and trailing edges and clear windshield. This model came from the estate of a very active and particular early aircraft kit collector. It is like factory-new inside and has not been started. Complete with all parts, plans and decals.

Bagged kit - no box. The box is shown for reference only. 1970s issue. Nicely detailed kit with hi-res markings. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including decals and instructions. Over 1000 Trackers were completed for the Navy as carrier-based submarine hunters. Grumman was awarded the contract in 1950, and in 1952 the first XS2F-1 flew. The large belly radome contained the PAS-38 search radar and the AWQ-10 MAD detector was in the tail. ALD-3 ECM performed DF (direction finding) duties, and the 70 million candle power spotlight lit up targets at night. Sonobuoys were held in both engine nacelles and offensive weapons included acoustic torpedoes, depth charges, rockets and conventional bombs. Trackers saw service in several other Navies including Canada.

Second logo issue kit from the late 1950s. Includes rare civil decals and paint scheme information for G-AMYV Silver City Airliner and military C-47. This kit is nicely detailed and molded for it's time. The gear retracts and extends, the elevator, rudder and ailerons move, props and wheels rotate, the rear and front doors can be positioned opened or closed, and there is an interior bulkhead and floor at the rear of the fuselage. Includes paratrooper, airline steward figure and two pilots. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Silver City was a independent British Airline that operated up to 15 DC-3s and was well known for it's Air Ferry Service with the Bristol Superfreighter (which Airfix also made a kit of).

Although not listed on the box side, there were also the dioramas 'Guadalcanal!', 'Chopper! Chopper!' and 'The Red Baron's Last Dogfight'. The kit has never been started. The logos on the two short sides do include the 'Famous Fighters'. Note the 100 price extension on the part number - this is a factory applied round '100' sticker over the old printed price extension.

The kit is molded in dark wood, ivory and wood tan. Also includes complete step by step assembly instructions and full rigging instructions/diagrams. The model has never been started.
