MPM Messerschmitt Me-262 A-1a/U4, 1/72, 72019

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

On January 10, 1945, Hitler held a conference during which the staff discussed ways that the Luftwaffe could restore a degree of air superiority. During this discussion, Hitler suggested to Goering that the 50mm cannon be installed in a '262 so that it could open fire at longer ranges with more telling results. Two different cannon were examined; the Mauser Mk214A was chosen over the Rheinmetall Borsig BK5 and was installed in Me-262 W.Nr. 111899. The aircraft made the first flight in February of 1945. The pilot, Herget, flew the craft in practice against ground target then actually flew to operational missions against a US bomber formation. On both occasions the gun jammed. A second aircraft was built, but it likely did not fly before the end of the war. American forces captured this second aircraft (named 'Wilma Jeanne and then 'Happy Hunter II') but it crashed while being flown to France. The decals furnished are for that second prototype. Limited issue injection molded kit. Very nicely detailed with all recessed panel lines and many photoetched parts. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.

First issue dated 1959 with 'Famous Fighters' logo in the oval sunburst. Privateers were actually civilian ships manned by private citizens. The early US Government gave the ships "letters of marque" and they were free to raid English shipping interests with the blessing of the US Government. Approximately 500 were in service until the practice was abolished. Although they were technically successful in raiding British shipping, the British soon blockaded the US ports and almost shut down the import/export trade. Well detailed kit. FROG is famous for creating the very first injection molded plastic models just before WWII. Before this, FROG (International Model Aircraft, Ltd.) was very well known for it's stick and tissue gliders and rubber-powered models. FROG actually stood for 'Flies Right Off the Ground' - in American competition, 'ROG' was actually a category in completion during the 1930s - the model had to 'Rise Off the Ground' on it's own. Frog even had a line of pre-fabricated rubber powered aircraft that could be flown right out of the box. The box cleverly incorporated a winding device. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions.
