Cleveland Fokker DR-1 Triplane - 18 Inch Wingspan Wooden Flying Model, 1/16, M-14

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Sold

This is a Cleveland 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. It was issued in 1932. The kit came from a long time collector of 1930s and 1940s models and is in exceptional condition. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, completely precarved nose cowl and wheels, covering material, metal stock, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and correct insignia. The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called 'The Aviation Craze' that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business, called Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviations great Recruiter, Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Sold

1/700 scale waterline kit. Very highly detailed and finely molded. The kit has never been started. Most parts are still in the internal factory sealed bag; the parts that are not have been inventoried complete including decals and instructions. The Kasuga Maru was one of a class of three Japanese ocean liners that were built for the Nippon Yusen K line. She was launched in September 1940 and saw very little or no service (accounts vary) as a transport before her conversion to the escort carrier Taiyo. Given the size and machinery of this class of liner, the IJN subsidized their construction and knew they would make fine escort carriers. The Taiyo went on to have a very active career. She was attacked many times and damaged several times. Taiyo was eventually sunk in a submarine attack in August 1944 with a heavy loss of life by the USS Rasher.

Advanced Molding Corp Ferrari Sportster Chamption Sports Car - (pre-Aurora), 1/32, 18

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: NM

Sold

Very rare and for the advanced collector of early plastic models. Even rarer in this condition; this is from old store stock that was recently discovered and has never been in public hands. Advanced Molding issued 7 pioneering plastic car kits in 1954. But in 1955, Aurora purchased the molds then released them (the first in '55) under the Aurora name and artwork. They became famous under the Aurora name but virtually unknown under the original Advanced label because they were issued for year or less. Advanced cleverly advertised all 7 kits on each box - the box top shows the kit inside, and the long side panels show 3 on each side. The 7 were the Cunningham, MG, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari Sportster, Corvette and Ferrari 342 America. This kit is the Ferrari Sportster, is molded in light green and is still sealed in the original factory krinkle clear plastic bag. I have not removed it from the box; it is exactly as it was shipped from the factory. With instructions in mint condition. The box is in extraordinary 'near mint' condition as well, with very light surface wear (as shown) as the only flaws. Advanced was located at 54 West 21st Street, New York 10, NY. After selling the cars, Advanced remained in the plastic model business with the Trailblazers HO train series in 1955 centered around the famous "General." It was issued as a locomotive and tender, or just the cars as set (passenger, mail combine, baggage, box car, flat car and caboose), or the cars each separately and the rare freight set which included the locomotive and tender, box car, flat car and caboose.

It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions.

Hudson Miniatures 1911 Maxwell Lil Old Timers Quickie Kit, 1/32

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Sold

Rare. When the Gowland/Revell 'Highway Pioneers' burst upon the hobby scene in 1951, they started a hobby revolution. Plastic model kits were not new in 1951, but successful mass marketing of plastic kits was new. The sensation swept the country, and Gowland & Revell could not make the kits fast enough. The fact that the public was buying these models shocked the successful hobby establishment. One such manufacture was Hudson Miniatures. In the 1940s, Hudson had established a name in making 1/16 scale 'Old Timer' models of automobiles. These were excellent kits with wood and metal parts, but a high degree of skill was required to carve and finish the wood parts. In the late 1940s, they added some injection molded plastic parts (usually acetate wheels) to the series but did not consider a completely plastic kit. When Hudson saw what was happening with the Highway Pioneers, he began to design his own 1/32 scale line called 'Lil Old Timers', which hit the stores in 1954. An early paper fold-out catalog shows 18 models including some real gems like the 1910 International Harvester Passenger Car, 1911 Brush Delivery Truck and 1906 Columbia Electric Car just to name a few. The line was bought by Revell a short time after it's release, and Revell did reissue some (but not all) of the kits. As you would expect from Hudson, this is a nice kit with excellent moldings and detail for the time. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions.

Hudson Miniatures 1914 Regal Lil Old Timers - Quickie Kit, 1/32

Rare. When the Gowland/Revell 'Highway Pioneers' burst upon the hobby scene in 1951, they started a hobby revolution. These were excellent kits with wood and metal parts, but a high degree of skill was required to finish the wood parts. In the late 1940s, they added some injection molded plastic parts (usually acetate wheels and lamps) to the series but the rest of the kit remained wood. When Hudson saw what was happening with the Highway Pioneers, he began to design his own 1/32 scale line of all-plastic cars called 'Lil Old Timers', which hit the stores in 1954. An early paper fold-out catalog shows 18 models including some real gems like the 1910 International Harvester Passenger Car, 1911 Brush Delivery Truck and 1906 Columbia Electric Car just to name a few. The 1914 Regal Coupe is perhaps the rarest of all cars ever built in America. It was underslung, which was rare for the time, and the body was all wood and similar to old horse-drawn carriages of colonial times. The design was sometimes called a Colonial Coupe. The large car seated only two people and could hit 40 mph with it's 25 hp engine.

Hudson Miniatures 1913 Mercer Raceabout Lil Old Timers - Quickie Kit, 1/32

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Rare. Never started and all parts are still in the factory sealed bag; includes instructions. These kits have a very interesting history. As you would expect from Hudson, this is a nice kit with excellent moldings and detail for the time. The Mercer was perhaps the most famous sports car of it's day, and it can be successfully argued that it was America's first sports car. The 30 horsepower 'T' head 4 cylinder engine sped it along at over 80 miles per hour. A 1914 Mercer clocked 112 mph at Daytona Beach - no mean feat for that age.

Hudson Miniatures 1903 Ford A Model With Working Brass Lanterns, 1/16

Wood and Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

Includes 'Made In Japan for Aristocraft 'Old Time Auto Headlights 1-12 volts brass. These lanterns are beautiful and they used the original Hudson plastic parts as a pattern as they are identical in every way, except these are brass and include operating lights. Never used and still factory sealed inside with instructions. The actual kit is dated 1949 and very highly detailed for that time. Features numerous die-cut, machined and cut wood parts, beautiful plastic wheels, lights, steering wheel, horn and other accessories, metal parts and die cut cardstock. Although all of Hudson's 1/16 kits have excellent detail, this one has even more detail than usual thanks to Hudson's engineers having access to the actual car. This kit has never been started. The small parts are still in the internally sealed factory bag and the other parts that were never sealed have been inventoried complete with all parts and plans/instructions. This car was one of the first Ford Automobiles and the first 'A' model. It sold for $900 in 1903. Hudson Miniatures created a very popular line of automobile kits in a constant 1/16 scale shortly after WWII. The kits sold very well...so well that you could argue that Gowland & Gowland borrowed Hudson's subject matter for their ground-breaking 'Highway Pioneers.' The Hudson Miniatures 'Old Timers' even spawned a line of imitators, with Fador's 'Smallster' being one of the better in quality. Sales did drop on the appearance and popularity of the much smaller (and less accurate) Gowland/Revell 'Highway Pioneers' in 1951. When the all-injection molded Gowland kits proved not to be a passing fad, Hudson quickly planned and released his own all-plastic, small-scale competition called 'Lil' Old Timers Quickie Kits.' The kits were of excellent quality, but it was too little too late. Additionally, sales of the excellent wooden kits faltered further in the next few years with the introduction of accurate, 1/24 and 1/32 all-plastic cars in the mid 1950s. This forced Hudson to discontinue the wood kits and the plastic line was sold to Revell and subsequently re-released. Today, these excellent, big 1/16 kits are often the only model available of these early automobiles. In the mid 1960s Aurora thought so highly of Hudson Miniatures that they purchased the wood kit assets and released a very small number of these in all-plastic models.
