Berkeley is a very famous manufacturer of flying model kits from the Golden Age of flying aviation, about 1932-1954. Founded in 1933 by William Effinger, the company was quite progressive in producing quality kits - it was likely the Berkeley 'Buccaneer' was the first gas powered model in kit form. In the later 1930s, Effinger acquired the services of a very talented Henry Struck. Struck went on to design numerous award-winning kits under the Berkeley name. Berkeley weathered the post WWII recession and emerged as a major kit producer in the late 1940 and 1950s. These were great years for Berkeley and they produced some incredible and large kits. The company went bankrupt in about 1960 however. Fox engines (Duke Fox) bought the company and released the kits alongside his own FOX models and engines. This arrangement did not last, and in the early 1960s the Berkeley name disappeared from hobby shop shelves.

Aurora The Hartford - Admiral Farragut's Flagship at Mobile Bay, 1/115, 441-600

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

1966 issue. The Hartford was the flagship of Rear Admiral David Farragut. In the Hartford he lead the Union Fleet to capture the Confederate forts guarding Mobile Bay, the only part of the Gulf Coast still in Confederate hands. In this long battle Farragut scored one of the key naval victories of the war. Very large and well detailed kit. Measures over 2 feet long and features metal anchor chain, running and standing rigging and molded ratlines and sails. The kit has never been started. All gray and black parts are still in the factory sealed bags. The white parts were never factory sealed but have been inventoried complete. The brown parts bag had a split so I opened it and did an inventory and NOTE: missing (1) part, the martingale ('spike' down from the bowsprit). I have included a properly tapered yard of good size from a built Hartford so you can reproduce this part and build the model. Includes instructions, rigging materials and flag sheet.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Large, near 1/100 scale kit includes full landing gear, clear cockpit windows, full color decals and display stand. Molded in white and clear with the big, clear 'world' triangle display stand. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The box top has amazing color and gloss but is graded 'excellent' because there is a ding on the right short side. The box tray is intact but has clear tape on part of it.

Aurora Convair 880 SuperJet TWA, 1/103, 384-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Dated 1961 and the first issue. Note the 'Hobby Kits' slogan in the border of the Aurora logo and the Parents' Magazine Seal at the lower left. Rare near 1/100 scale kit molded in white and clear with recessed control surface and door lines. Features clear cockpit windshield, full landing gear and a large clear 'Triangle World' stand. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The Convair 880 and its near sister 990 were very high performance airliners. Unfortunately they did not find favor with commercial operators. Only 65 880s were produced from 1959 to 1962. The aircraft was designed to be smaller and faster than the DC-8 and 707 - this market did not develop, however, and if it did it could have been served with less expensive designs. The 990 was a larger and faster (mach .91) airliner, but it failed to meet it's range criteria for east to west crossings of the USA. As a result, only 37 were made. Interestingly enough, several 990s continued to be operated by private owners and NASA operated two 990s for decades after the last 990 was phased out of commercial service.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

The kit features very fine panel lines, highly detailed cockpit and engine, removable cowling and optional position canopy, working flaps and drop tank/bomb load. There are decals for three Japanese aircraft and one for a captured USAAF evaluation aircraft. There is also the Revell Japan full color large print of two of the aircraft that can be built. Megow Taylor Cub 50 Inch Wingspan Flying Aircraft, D3

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Rare kit From the late 1930s. This is the finest example I have ever seen with an 'excellent' condition box and the contents just as it left the factory - never started and complete. One of the few Megow 'Big Wingspan' scale kits that were the flagships of the line. They were expensive and few of them sold, hence the rarity today. The Taylor Cub J2 features many sheets of high quality printwood, precut stripwood and spars, fully formed wheels, balsa blocks as required, covering tissue and excellent, full-size plans with extensive construction notes. Never started and complete.

Lindberg IJN I-53 Type C-3 Submarine With Kaitens - 58.5 Inches Long, 1/72, 70818

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Rare and long out of production. This giant kit features over 300 parts. Many people have converted it to remote control (R/C parts not furnished). The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. Please note that the box looks much better than the 'good+' grade but I have graded it as such because there is an approx 7" closed tear on one long side panel. Everything inside is still in factory-mint condition. NOTE: this is such a large kit that it can only be shipped alone (not with other kits). This very large box can be mailed within the USA and some overseas countries; however it cannot ship to certain countries with smaller postal size restrictions.
