RS Models Sombold So 344 - (So-344), 1/72, 72065

Sold

Rare kit of an even rarer subject. Excellent quality, high definition resin model with a perfect condition vacuform canopy (not yellowed) and more. Never started and the parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. In January of 1944 this aircraft was designed by engineer Heinz G. Sombold of the Bley firm located in Naumburgg/Saale. Originally conceived as a parasite escort aircraft, it was modified to be a weapon to break up Allied Bomber streams over German. A specially converted bomber would carry the So-334 and launch it from a height of 400m. Then it would begin a parabolic approach powered by the Walther rocket engine to avoid enemy fighters. After obtaining the correct altitude, the pilot would dive at the center of the bomber 'box' at a 45 degree angle and release the explosive nose section. For landing it had skids very similar to the Heinkel Julia project. Work on the So-334 was abandoned at the start of 1945 when a 1/5 scale aerodynamic model had already been built and tested.
