Ontos is a Greek word for 'The Thing' and the vehicles lives up to that. Developed along a new concept in mobile warfare, the Ontos has little defense other than movement but a very powerful offensive punch. It carries six 106mm recoilless rifles and .50 caliber spotting rifles. The firing sequence went like this: the crew of three would get out and hand-load the six large guns. Then the Ontos would quickly move towards the target. Once sited, the gunner would file the .50 caliber spotting rifle. This gun fired a different cartridge, a special low velocity round that matched the trajectory of the 106mm. The spotting round was very accurate and made a visible flash on striking the target. Then he could fire a full salvo of 6 or in steps of two. The 8.5 ton vehicle would then speed away, moving to a safe location to reload.

Revell 1910 International Auto Wagon - Highway Pioneers US Antique Series, 1/32, H62-89

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

1954 early issue molded in bright yellow plastic. The parts are still factory sealed in the original 'krinkle' bag and includes instructions. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys.

Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). MPM Kawasaki Ki-64 Rob Heavy Fighter, 1/72, 72119

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

The Ki-64 experimental heavy fighter was one of the most advanced and unusual Japanese wartime aircraft. The powerplant was the 2350 hp Kawasaki Ha-201, which was two Ha-40 12 cylinder liquid-cooled engines mounted in tandem and driving two contra-rotating propellers. The forward prop, driven by the rear engine, was variable pitch while the rear prop was driven by the front engine and was fixed pitch. The steam vapor cooling system used water and the wing and flap surfaces for cooling. Five flights were made starting in December 1943. On the last flight, a fire started in the rear engine. An emergency landing saved the airplane, but repairs were not completed before the end of the war. Limited edition injection molded kit. Features very fine recessed panel lines, vac canopy and full decals. Never started. Factory sealed bag with decals and instructions.

Guillows Hawker Mk1 Hurricane - 16 inch Wingspan Balsa Flying Model, 506

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

1976 stick and tissue flying model. One of a very popular series of World War 2 kits. Includes die cut balsa parts, vacuform nose, wheels, plastic propeller, hardware, vacuform canopy, colored tissue, insignia and full size plans with detailed building instructions. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes insignia and instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2016.
