NOTE: missing #146 and #153 mast 'trees' - although on this ship they are round. Inventoried with all other parts, sails, flags, rat lines and instructions present. Hawk Granville Gee Bee 1932 Thompson Trophy Winner - One Piece Box Issue from 1949, 1/48, 601

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

Very rare 1949 issue. For the advanced model collector. The box is in exceptional condition, which is rare for these thin, early boxes. Color and gloss are as new. There is light wear only. All the corners are solid as are all the inner flaps and end closures. There are no repairs. The kit is molded in white, has not been started and is 100% complete. The instructions are in excellent condition. Please note that this early kit did not come with decals. The markings are raised in the plastic and the instructions tell how to paint them. This is a model kit with a fascinating history for it is among the early injection molded kits produced in the United States (please see the article about early USA kit production on this website). The Hawk model company was the most innovative in America and had been making constant 1/48 scale models in wood with metal accessories since the late 1920s. During the re-run of the World's Fair in 1933, Hawk may have made the world's first injection molded airplanes models - but they were not kits. The models were completely finished and were on display for the then-large sum of $25 each. The Mates brothers, who founded and ran Hawk, were quick to incorporate this new technology by replacing the metal detail parts with injection molded details to the wooden kits in the late 1930s. During the war, Hawk put it's injection molding knowledge to work making ID models for the US Armed Forces. Originally there was a nation-wide program to have children and adults make these from wood, but consistency was an issue - injection molded solved this problem. Immediately after WWII in 1946, Hawk made the Curtiss Racer model injection molded in black tenite. The box was a simple one-color affair. This may have been the first injection molded airplane kit produced in the USA; another contender is the Varney's PT-17. Both met a very cool reception at hobby shops. Hawk quickly changed the Curtiss box to two colors and added box artwork while molding the kit is bright yellow acetate. In 1947, Hawk approached toy stores since hobby shops were giving the kit poor promotion. The toy stores did much better. Spurred on by toy store sales in 1947, Hawk added four classic racers in 1948, all molded in acetate - the Gee Bee, Howard Ike, Laird Solution and the Supermarine S6B. In 1949, Hawk switched to polystyrene, which is this kit.

UPC Airship R-100 (ex-Frog) - with Mooring Mast, 1/500, 5040-500

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

UPC (Universal Power Master)kit from quality Frog molds. Rare and excellent kit. Features a large Montreal Mooring Mast and detailed airship with clear engine pods and passenger gondola. The model includes a clever set of metal rods that allows the airship to be displayed 'floating' in mid-air from the mooring mast. R-100 measures about 17 inches long. The kit has never been started. All parts are still sealed in the internal factory plastic bag. Complete with decals and instructions. The R-100 was built by a Vickers Subsidiary. The famous Barnes Wallis worked on her design, which lead to the innovative geodesic airframe used for the Wellington and two other aircraft. The R-100 made a successful Transatlantic flight. Although there were issues, the design was sound. However, the government-built R-101 was not as soundly engineered and crashed on her maiden voyage, forever bringing an end to the Airship in the British Isles. The R-100 was sold for scrap and R-102 was never built. UPC stood for Universal Powermaster Corporation which was based out of New York City, NY. UPC did not cut their own molds, but bought kits already molded from other manufacturers and re-boxed the kits in the USA. Scott Eidson, the famous artist best known for his artwork with Revell, also did almost all the UPC box art in the 1960s, but this kit is unusual in that it kept the Frog Green series artwork. All UPC production ended in the 1970s.
