Sterling British SE-5 Scout - 40 inch Wingspan Scale RC Airplane, FS22

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

Very large full-scale kit. Even the rib spacing in the wings and tail is correct, as is the stringer spacing of the fuselage. The only exception to scale is the modern airfoil cross section. Designed for R/C or control line with a .19 to .29 gas engine and measures 30.5 inches long with a 40 3/8 inch wingspan. Highly detailed. Features all die-cut sheet wood parts of very high quality balsa, numerous plastic details and metal radiator parts, wood and metal stock as needed, dowels, blocks and cut to shape wood, a great deal of hardware, three huge full color decal sheets and superb full size plans with instructions on them. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I personally considered Sterlings to be 'deluxe' kits.

The kit has never been started. Inventoried with all parts present. Fador was another maker of big 1/16 classic cars and competed with the bigger Hudson Miniatures. Fador called the line 'Smallersters' and the design & parts breakdown of the kits are very similar. The full name was Fador Mfg. Company and the address was 501E. Clinton St., Elmira, NY. Hudson Miniatures, launched in 1948, apparently beat Fador to the market by at least a year or more. Hudson's national success probably lead Fador to choose the same subject (antique cars) and in the same scale, 1/16. Hudson snatched up the most obvious classic automobiles for kit subjects, forcing Fador to select very carefully. Fortunately, they chose well and they are still the only models ever made of these subjects. There is no record of Fador making any plastic kits; the introduction and overwhelming popularity of the Revell/Gowland Highway Pioneers and the models that quickly followed probably drove them out of the market. This was the fate of most wooden kit manufacturers who did not make the transition. In 1949 the Fador line consisted of a 1909 Hupmobile Roadster, 1904 Cadillac Runabout, 1905 REO 4 Passenger Runabout and one kit that was "3 In 1' - it made one of the following: 1909 EMF Single Rear Seater, 1909 EMF Touring or EMF Roadster. The Baker Electric kit was introduced in 1950 and possibly others as well.

Guillows De Havilland DHC-1 Chipmunk -17 inch Wingspan Flying Aircraft, 50-2

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Rare early issue dated 1954. Please note the old 'Guillow's' logo. Rubber-powered flying model that features die cut balsa parts, bright red vacuform nose, fully finished wood wheels, bright yellow plastic propeller, wire prop shaft, vacuform canopy (that is still perfectly clear and not yellowed), covering tissue (badly wrinkled up), insignia and full size plans with very detailed building instructions. The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.
