Renwal USS Lexington Angled Deck Aircraft Carrier - CV-16 With Regulus Guided Missiles, 1/500, 607-229

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

Hardbox issue from the early 1960s. This is the most accurate injection molded kit of this ship in the Post-WWII early angled deck configuration. The USS Lexington took part in many WWII battles in the Pacific. She was placed in the reserve fleet, but was then modified into an angle-deck Essex like many of her sisters and recommissioned in 1955. This configuration is modeled upon the ship in late 1950s. Like all Renwal ships, the details are excellent and the moldings very fine. Features full hull, propeller and rudder detail, Regulus I missiles and launchers, moving elevators, air wing with F9F-8 Cougars (wings folded and unfolded), A3D Skywarriors & Helicopters, separately molded primary and secondary AA guns, directors, detailed island structure and more. NOTE: this kit has very minor and 'professional' quality subassembly as follows: bottom plate to hull; #17 and 18 elevator guides glued to superstructure. There is no other assembly. Inventoried and NOTE: missing (2) #61 antennas which are easily made with wire or pulled sprue. Otherwise complete including all other parts, color flag sheet, decals and instructions. Includes (5) extra Cougars with wings folded. One helicopter rotor blade is broken off but present for repair.

Lindberg Gouda Dutch Man-O-War - 17th Century - (ex Pyro / Life-Like), 70871

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

From original Pyro molds cut in the late 1960s. This large scale model measures about 14 inches long when assembled and is very nicely molded and detailed for that time. Features well over 250 parts, individually molded cannon, cradles and hull cannon barrel hatches, separately molded fife rails with belaying pins, pre-molded rat lines, billowing sails, blocks and a good rigging drawing. Molded in wood brown and white plastic. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including instructions. Any kit of a Dutch 17th Century Man-o-War is rare - and this may be the only injection molded kit ever made of this famous subject. The Gouda fought in the Anglo-Dutch Wars. She was built about 1636 and was commanded by Jan Egbertsz Ooms. The Gouda and other ships from Witte de With's fleet were lost in a storm in early November 1653. Pyro did not cut molds based on popularity, but usually by the historical significance of the subject. This was not a good business practice, but today's collectors and builders are grateful to have kits of these subjects.

Full hull model has 128 parts, full propeller and rudder detail, complete superstructure and deck fittings, decals and more. The kit has never been started. All parts are still in the factory sealed internal bag and includes decals with numbers and flag and instructions. On March 8, 1942, the Campbeltown sailed up the Loire River. Her mission was to destroy the Normandie Drydock, a possible haven for the Tirpitz which was holed up on Norway at this time. The Campbeltown was disguised as a German warship and the bow was packed with 8500 lbs of high explosive depth charges. Under a RAF diversion, Campbeltown fought her way up the river and rammed the dock doors at full speed. Charges at the stern sank the back of the ship and she was wedged in the dock. During a German inspection 8 hours later, the charges went off, scattering parts of the ship up to one mile away. The dock was rendered useless to the Tirpitz, who now had to stay in Norway.

Hillcrest US Army 1909 Wright Biplane - World's First Military Aircraft, 1/65

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Very rare. Hillcrest was one of the pioneers among American plastic model kit manufacturers. Two kits are known to exist - this one and the Curtiss Pusher. There may have been a Bleriot XI but this is unconfirmed. Model Plastic Products of Hollywood, California was the parent company and they first issued the two kits under that name in 1951. In 1952 the Hillcrest name was used. The kits were a radical departure from other kits of the day that required tedious building and finishing of wood parts. For this reason Hillcrest advertised "prefabricated" and "assembly time 3 to 6 hours" on the box least they be mistaken for traditional wooden kits. The kit has injection molded main parts for the internal framework of the actual aircraft. The small cello bag is still sealed and contains fine the details such as the engine, tank and more. The framework is to be covered in tissue which is supplied along with rigging material. The instructions have a very nice three view drawing, parts diagram and written instructions. Never started and complete. All of the special internal cardboard that holds the parts and sealed packed is intact and in very good condition. The outer box is complete and the top flap is nice as shown, but overall the box is only 'good' with some clear tape on torn corners and some general deforming of the box as shown. This aircraft, called a "Flyer" by the Wrights, was built for the US Army about five years after the first Kitty Hawk aircraft. The aircraft incorporated many improvements and was built of very high quality hickory, ash and spruce. Wings were two-spar construction with built-up ribs and wire trailing edges. The airfoil had a camber-cord ratio of 1 to 20 and both sides were covered by a rubberized fabric. This aircraft had the doubtful distinction of having the first fatal air crash. A propeller cracked and tore the rudder loose, killing Lt. Selfridge while seriously injuring Orville Wright.
