Berkeley Privateer Flying Boat Flying Model Airplane Kit

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc++

Sold

Originally designed as a gas powered model for free flight or control line, or can be converted to electric power and modern RC (radio control) gear. Big 36 inch wingspan. Kit features precision cut wood parts, die cut windshield, shaped and notched leading and trailing edges, NACA 'Long Planing Hull' design, all sheet balsa fuselage, self-draining hull and sponsons, metal motor mount and nacelle, full sized plans and more. Berkeley is a very famous manufacture of flying model kits from the Golden Age of flying aviation, about 1932-1954. Founded in 1933 by William Effinger, the company was quite progressive in producing quality kits - it was likely the Berkeley 'Buccaneer' was the first gas powered model in kit form. In the later 1930s, Effinger acquired the services of a very talented Henry Struck. Struck went on to design numerous award-winning kits under the Berkeley name. Berkeley weathered the post WWII recession and emerged as a major kit producer in the late 1940 and 1950s. These were great years for Berkeley and they produced some incredible and large kits. The company went bankrupt in about 1960 however. Fox engines (Duke Fox) bought the company and released the kits alongside his own FOX models and engines. This arrangement did not last, and in the early 1960s the Berkeley name disappeared from hobby shop shelves.

Can be assembled with or without landing gear. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. The Swift was a very early jet fighter to replace the Supermarine Attacker. A very capable aircraft, the Swift suffered numerous accidents early on. As a result, less than 200 were ever built and it did not see combat. It did hold a world speed record for a short time, only to have a Douglas Skyray take the record a few hours later. The problems were ironed out, but by then the Hawker Hunter was proving very capable and there was no need for the Swift and it's RAF service life was short. The most successful version was the PR variant.

Carl Goldberg Models Hi Thrust Viking - 48 inch Wingspan .049-.051 Gas Free Flight Airplane, G10-350

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Large parasol design for sport or competition free flight. Carl Goldberg was a gifted designer of model aircraft, and his career spanned the evolution of flying models. His designs and number of titles won in competition at the Nationals is legendary. His first competition was the 1928 Nationals, where he received honorable mention. By 1934 he won the indoor Nats and in 1935 he opened a Hobby Shop, among the first in the nation (the first one was probably opened by Cleveland Models Ed Packard). Awards came quickly. He wrote articles for Model Airplane News, and was Comet's top designer from 1939 till 1945. After Comet, he worked with Mike Schlesinger and Sid Axelrod on what eventually became Top-Flite Models. In 1955 he founded Carl Goldberg Models and released a still-popular line of scale, rubber, gas, glider and RC models. Needless to say, Goldberg's models are of the highest quality. The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions.

Monogram Speedee Bilt North American B-25 Mitchell Invader Wood and Plastic Kit, H-1

Wood and Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair++

Sold

Rare early Monogram kit from the early 1950s. Fantastically well detailed and presented multi-media kit with 34 injection molded clear, red, black and gray acetate and 57 die cut or shaped balsa parts including the famous Monofoil pre-formed wing. This example has never been started and is inventoried 100% complete with all parts, glue, dope, decals, sand paper, plans and instruction book. Still has internal packing as shown. Printed balsa parts were falling from the sheet, so I taped them together on the original sheet with clear tape. NOTE: the box looks VG but is graded only fair due to the fact that it is missing the bottom long side. Decals have damage as shown. This is the first large-scale non-flying scale Speedee-Bilt model, the B-25 Mitchell. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. Monogram, however, wanted to make true scale models that could still be assembled easily. So they created the four large and highly detailed non-flying scale Speedee-Bilt bombers - the B-25, B-26, B-24 and B-17. The kits were a tremendous success and sold well in the early to mid 1950s.
