Guillows Bristol Bullet - 18 inch Wingspan Rubber Powered Balsa Wood Kit, WW-7

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

One of a very popular line of World War 1 flying aircraft stick and tissue kits with 18 inch wingspan. Kit features scale plastic wheels, plastic propeller, light vacuform nose cowl, die cut balsa parts, colored tissue, rubber motor and full decals. Includes full size detailed plans. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.

Maircraft Vultee Vanguard Solid Wood Model Airplane, 1/48, S7

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Maircraft was originally founded in the early or mid 1930s by Gordon Christoph and went by the name Aircraft Model Company. The company produced a typical line of solid 'profile cut' kits that required the usual high talent levels for carving and finishing. A former Comet Model Airplane & Supply Co. salesman, Jack Mair, bought the company in the early 1940s and renamed it Maircraft. This company was one of the handful of solid kit producers who issued models in a consistent 1/48 scale during the 1930s and 1940s (others included Hawk and Dyna-Model). This lead to one of the most desirable and rare model kits ever produced in the USA - the wood/plastic 1/48 United DC-3 model issued immediately after World War 2. Other than the P-61 and a few other Maircraft offerings, most were simple kits that sold for the low price of about 35 cents and gave the owners many hours of pleasurable work. This kit features a full size plan with instructions steps, fuselage that is about 80% cut, profile cut parts, printwood and a small bag of details. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions.

Strombecker Northrop P-61 Black Widow, C33

Wood and Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+++

Sold

Before plastic kits were introduced, Strombecker was famous as the premier hardwood preshaped model manufacture. In the 1940s and 1950s, Strombecker kits were flawlessly engineered but not inexpensive. All wooden parts are hardwood and are precarved to shape - usually only a quick sanding would finish them. This kit is hardwood with many plastic injection molded parts, so it was produced in the transition from wood to plastic. The P-61 is one of the rarest of the WWII Strombeckers. The model includes plastic detail parts, decals, glue and sandpaper. The carving is done to the final shape - which makes for some impressive parts for a Black Widow. When complete it makes an impressive desk top display model with an 11 inch wingspan. Never started. 100% complete with all parts, decals and detailed plans/instructions.

Hawk Northrop P-61 Black Widow Solid Wood Kit, 1/48

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

For the advanced Hawk collector. Hawk was one of the few manufacturers making wooden kits to a constant scale of 1/48 as far back as the late 1920s. However, the company was innovative as it quickly included injection molded accessories in the late 1930s. This kit is from 1944. Almost all Hawk kits were put in colorful but generic boxes and the name of the model was stamped on the side - but the large 1/48 P-61 got it's own large box and special artwork! Contains cut-out wooden main airframe sections and details, decals, full sized plans, templates for wings and fuselage cross-section shapes, wheels, turned and shaped cowlings and two injection molded propellers. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.

Airmodel ZMC-2 (Z MC-2) Metal-Clad Rigid Airship - US Navy 1929 - Bagged, 1/72, 237

Vacuform Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Rare. Very large 1/72 scale US Navy Rigid Airship. Measures just over 24 inches long when assembled. Features white plastic vacuformed main body, fins and details. Includes history and instructions/plans. Never started. NOTE: missing clear gondola. This was a two piece clear shell. Includes all other parts and instructions. The idea of a rigid airship using a monocoque metal skin had been tried in Germany in 1897 with the 'Schwarz'. In 1929 the ADC tried a more successful experiment with the ZMC-2 - the MC stood for 'Metal Clad'. A supporting structure of twelve ring frames mounted on twenty-four longitudinal lattice beams. This structure was entirely covered with duralumin and pure aluminum foil sandwich skinning amounting to no more than a few hundredths of a millimeter in thickness. This metal envelope was gas tight and was directly filled with helium. Two Wright Whirlwind engines of 220hp were used. The ZMC-2 first flew on August 19, 1929. She had a maximum speed of 48 mph and entered the US Navy as a training vessel. It was scrapped in 1942 after 12 years of trouble-free service.
