Airfix Great Western Ocean Liner, 1/180, 882-1800

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

Large scale Japan issue. The Great Western was the first ship specifically built for the Atlantic Ferry Service and was designed by I.K. Brunel (who designed the Great Eastern). When launched in 1837, she carried 120 first class, 20 second class, and beds could be set up for an additional 100 if needed. The crew was 60 men. The first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean was in April of 1838 and took just over 15 days. After crossing the Atlantic 64 times, she ran for 10 years between Southampton and the West Indies before being broken up in 1857. The kit has never been started. NOTE: Missing one part, the rudder. This is a flat part that is well illustrated in the instructions- you can reproduce it fairly easily. I have included some thick plastic to help with that. Guillows Nieuport 11 - 24 inch Wingspan for Free Flight or R/C Conversion, 203

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Sold

Purchased new on May 2, 1966 at Uncle Bob's Hobby Shop in Cleveland, Ohio. Large scale, well detailed kit. Can be flown rubber free flight, gas free flight, or converted to electric RC using modern small, light servos and receivers. Features quality die-cut balsa sheet parts, stripwood and sparts, die-cut plywood firewall for gas operation, light plastic cowl, pilot bust, machine guns, engine and more, scale plastic wheels, rubber motor, thrust button, plastic propeller, big sheet of full color decals, covering tissue and excellent full size plans with instructions. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.
