Lindberg Flying Saucer, 1/48, 517

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

Rare and dates from the early 1950s. A fine example inside and out of the first issue with Lindberg 'Round' logo on all four side panels. Widely claimed to be the first science fiction model kit. Naturally, the scale is approximate. The box has 'very good' color and gloss. All four corners are solid and there is no fading, no price tags, and no tape or tape marks other than the factory sealing tape. The main parts are molded in silver, the 'alien pilot' in medium green and the dome in clear. Decals are 'excellent' with typical yellowing. Decals have the 'round' logo and the early 'small' format instructions have the rectangle logo - typical for Lindberg kits. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions.

Huma Model DFS-228 - Rocket Powered High Altitude Reconnaissance Aircraft, 1/72, 3503

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Rare injection molded kit. Features fine, all recessed panel lines, highly detailed cockpit module, landing skid, parts for joining the aircraft to a 1/72 Do-217 K-3, full size color drawings, markings for civil and military versions and full instructions with fascinating history notes. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The DFS-228 was to operate at 23,000 meters (over 75,400 feet) where enemy interception was impossible. Flight profile was to be as follow: take off in a Mistel combination with a Do-217. At about 33,000 feet the '228 would separate by firing it's Walter liquid-fuel rocket engine. Within 5 minutes, it would be at over 75,000 ft. The actual recon task would then take place under powerless flight while powerful Zeiss infra-red cameras took photos. The aircraft would then glide another 750 km before reaching the original release height, then another 350 km after that, giving plenty of time to reach friendly territory and again making interception difficult if not impossible. Extraordinary protection had to be given to the pilot at such altitudes. His pressure cabin could, in an emergency, be blown free with four explosive bolts. After the separated front module reached a safe altitude where the pilot could survive without oxygen, the pilot was ejected through the front windscreen and a parachute deployed. By the end of the war several prototypes had been built. Flight testing, however, was only performed in non-powered glides from a maximum altitude of 10,000 meters.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

1952 issue molded in black plastic. The kit has not been started. All the parts and instructions are still sealed in the factory internal 'krinkle' bag. This is an early Gowland manufactured issue with the balloon logo on the side. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys.
