The US Navy used to offer designs of one firm to other manufacturers to build, the theory being that this helped the young aircraft industry. PD-1 was the name given to the 25 Douglas built airplanes based on the Curtiss PN-12 design. PN-12 was the logical progression of the PN-5, which was the increased wingspan version of the WWI F2A. Other companies that built the PN-12 with minor changes were Martin (PM-1, PM-2), Keystone (PK-1) and the Hall PH-1. All of these types served from the early 1930s until replaced by the more modern Consolidated P2Ys and ultimately the PBY.

Rare and still the only kit ever made of this subject. Includes parts and instructions so you can build either the BG-1 or the modified XB2G-1. During its short existence (1928-1936), the Great Lakes Aircraft Corporation had only one type in achieve series production, the BG-1. It was designed as a scout and dive bomber and was very well liked by those who flew it. The range was a bit shorter than desired with a 1000 lb bomb, so Great Lakes designed the XB2G-1, which was a greatly modified BG-1 that carried the bomb internally among other changes. However when it was ready for testing, other aircraft were already more suited to the dive bombing task. This is a very high quality kit with metal details, extruded plastic strut material, full decals and white vacuform moldings that rival or surpass injection molded parts in detail. This aircraft is one in the line of Grover Loening's famous 1920's amphibians. In 1928 five OA-1As were chosen for the 'Pan American Cruise' that began in San Antonio Texas, flew to the southern most spot in South America, then returned north to Washington, DC for a total of 22,000 miles. An OA-1B (Army version) could be built with minor scratch modifications. The OL-6 s were used as observation aircraft and were catapult launched from US battleships and cruisers. After the OL-6 were replace by more modern aircraft, they continued to be used as 'Admiral's Barges', general utility 'hacks' in both the US Navy and the US Marine Corps.

The US Navy knew a good thing and bough several with Packard and Liberty engines. With the Pratt and Whitney radial, this was the ultimate development of the 1920s amphibs. 46 OL-8 and OL-9s saw successful service with the US Navy. NOTE: perfect builder, please read carefully for condition. Although the N3N looked similar to many biplanes of the day, it was a revolutionary design for the mid 1930s. The sturdy, all-metal construction allowed it to meet the '25 year service' requirement. In reality the aircraft served in the Navy up to 1961! It was the first aircraft soloed by thousands of naval aviators and many still continue to fly in civil service. It was designed and built by the government owned Naval Aircraft Factory at Philadelphia. This very high quality kit features optional parts for float or land based versions, cast metal details, detailed cockpit, extruded strut material and full color decals & paint guides for multiple aircraft. The molding quality of the white main airframe parts rivals or surpasses many injection molded kits. There is no assembly. Very rare and still the only model kit ever of this subject, in any scale. The Dolphin was the development of the Sinbad flying boat of the 1930s. Initially designed as a civil transport, the US Coast Guard quickly saw the potential and used it as a flying lifeboat. The Army used Dolphins under the designations OA-3, OA-4, C-26 and C-29. The Navy and Marines designated them RD-1 through RD-4 and used them as VIP transports. The very first presidential carrier was a Dolphin for Franklin D. Roosevelt, and the Dolphin was the very first Douglas commercial transport as well. This is a very high quality vac kit with white vacuform main parts, full interior and fine cast metal details.
