This 1956 issue has the very colorful 'S' artwork that has made these kits so desirable today. This model is very well molded for that time and features all recessed panel lines, opening front cargo door, rotating counter-rotating propellers and more. Molded in dark sea blue and includes the famous clear Revell 'Globe' display stand. Never started and inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. In 1945 the US Navy asked Convair to develop a large flying boat based on the new World War II technology and the developing turbo-prop engines. Convair's proposal was the Model 117. high-wing flying boat with Allison T40 engines driving six-bladed contra-rotating propellers. The design has a slender body, high-mounted high lift wing and fixed floats. The Navy was impressed enough to order two prototypes in May of 1946. The first prototype was designated XP5Y-1 and first flew off San Diego on April 18, 1950. In August the aircraft set a turboprop endurance record of eight hours six minutes. Although impressed with the design, the Navy decided not to build the patrol version and decided to make her into a passenger and cargo aircraft. A total of eleven aircraft were built. The first two prototypes built were in P5Y configuration, armed with 8,000 lb (3,600 kg) of munitions (bombs, mines, depth charges, torpedoes) and five pairs of 20 mm cannon in fore and aft side emplacements and a tail turret. The next five were built as R3Y-1 aircraft, intended for troop transport and inflight tanker service. The final six were built as the R3Y-2 variant with a upward-hinged nose and high cockpit for heavy roll-on-roll-off transport duties. In this way it was thought the design would function as a 'Flying LST.' In practice, it was discovered that it was almost impossible for the pilots to hold the aircraft nose-on to the beach while it was unloaded. These were subsequently converted into inflight refueling tankers. However, they had a short life because of the unsolvable reliability problems that plagued the Allison T40 turboprop engines. That fate befell most of the T40-powered aircraft, like the Douglas A2D Skyshark.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: NM
$165
Rare true first issue in investment-grade 'Near Mint' condition. This is the 'short' 1.25" high pre-'S' hardbox issue (vs. the later standard size 1.4" high box). This kit has the correct, short-lived 1st issue 2 piece stand as opposed to the later 4 piece stand. The stand with this kit has a base and an arm with three prongs. This stand was discontinued shortly after introduction as it broke very easily. The model is molded in the correct gloss silver and clear plastic. Inside, the kit is in excellent condition. It has never been started. All of the parts have been inventoried complete and it includes the decals and instructions. The instructions are the correct early version that show the 3-prong stand arm. The instructions are in 'excellent++' condition with typical yellowing as the only noticeable flaw. The decals are the correct early version by 'Colortone' and are in excellent condition. Typical yellowing and very slight edge curling are the only flaws. The box has great color and gloss, four solid & original corners, no fading, rips or tears, no missing litho and no tape - this box even missed the factory taping machine! Flaws include slight discoloring on the left as shown and very light, isolated edge wear. The original Bullock's Los Angeles price tag is on the left short side and inside is the original (and elaborate) Bullock's hand-written receipt.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Exc++

Rare. 1957 first and only issue of this important test vehicle for studying re-entry of ICBM warheads. The box top is rated 'excellent++' condition with factory-new color and gloss, four solid corners, no stains or tears, no missing litho, the original price tag on the top short side and no tape (other than the factory sealing tape, of course). The flaws include very light & isolated general wear as shown and very light edge wear. Features a well detailed X-17 missile with three stages that can be separated, launch pad, crew, tracking instruments and more. Molded in olive drab and white plastic. Never started. Inventoried complete with all parts, decals and instructions. The decals a flat and in 'excellent' condition overall; the instructions are in 'excellent+' condition with typical age yellowing as the only significant flaw.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: VG++
$145
Rare 1954 hardbox issue with 89 cent price extension. This is the early small, thin box format measuring 13.25 x 4.1 x 1 inches. All parts are molded in correct gloss medium gray. Never started. It has been inventoried 100% complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. Decals are flat an in 'excellent++' condition and the instructions are 'very good++'. The box would grade higher than 'very good++' but it is rated as such because there is a 1/2" x 1/2" tape pull at the bottom center of the long top side.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: VG+++
$245
1958 first issue hardbox featuring some of my favorite 'S' box artwork. Correct, original issue molded in three colors; not the recent reissue. The box is in 'very good+++' condition with great color and gloss. There are no price tags, no tag marks, no litho tear or missing litho, no fading, four solid original corners and no stains. Flaws include even light general wear as shown, a very short and mild crease at the upper left and residue from thin, clear tape on all four sides. Loaded with working features typical of kits at the time. The entire gantry tower folds back and moves on railroad base, the elevator moves to the four different work platforms and the Explorer Satellite can be removed from the Jupiter rocket. Includes crew of 7. Inside, the kit has never been started. The parts are molded in the correct red, medium gray and white. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and completely flat 'very good++' condition decals and 'very good' instructions with typical yellowing and some edge wear, the heaviest at the bottom.
