This is the only ship kit released by Adams during their short production run in the late 1950s. This kit was also featured in the Nuclear Powered Gift set with two missiles. The model is well detailed and features a full hull with propeller & rudder, detailed superstructure, clear promanade deck window inserts, lifeboats & davits, detailed cargo boom assemblies, separately molded cargo hatches, color flag sheets, very cool looking 'Atomic' display stand and more. With full decals and includes side stripes. The kit has never been started. The small parts are still in the factory sealed bag. The larger parts were never sealed and have been inventoried complete. With decals and instructions. Please NOTE that the box displays better than the 'very good' grade but is rated as such because ther is a 'v' shaped section (1.5" wide at the base, 1/2" high) of box top missing along the lower long side and the right short side has wear/stains. Adams was founded by Steve Adams and released plastic assembly kits in the late 1950s. The company was innovative and the general quality of most kits was very high for the time- so much so that builders (not just collectors) still seek these models today. Adams is best known for a series of military vehicles and missiles, although they also released an aircraft (Saab Draken), helicopter (YH-41), balloon (La Coquette) and ship (SS Savannah). Some of these appeared in gift sets as well. The Adams smaller scale (1/40) Atomic Cannon, Hawk Missile Battery, Honest John, Vanguard (1/80), Thor (1/87)missiles and other kits are actively sought by builders and collectors. Combinations of these kits were issued in gift sets, which are very rare and desirable today. In the late 1950s, Adams entered into a joint venture with Revell and several of the military kits were released under the Revell label, such as the Jeep. Around 1960 there was a disagreement between Adams and Revell and the program was terminated. Sometime after this, Adams bowed out of the plastic model business. Revell ended up with the 'Miniatures' line & Lindberg got the Draken. Other molds surfaced later for UPC kits and in the late 1960s/early 70s Life-Like had many of them.

CV-9 USS Essex Angle Deck Carrier - 'S' Issue

$225

Includes a large and extensive decal sheet with full ship numbers, name, detailed deck markings and aircraft markings and more. The decals are in 'excellent' condition with light yellowing as the only flaw. Molded in the correct gloss gray. This kit has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals, flag sheet and instructions. The decals and flag sheet are both in 'excellent++' condition. The instructions are 'very good+'. The box has great color and gloss, four solid & original corners, no tear, tape or torn or missing lithogrphs. It displays much better than the 'good++' grade but it is rated as such because there is a crease at the lower center as shown and several pin holes (literally made by straight pins) in the box top. They cannot be seen in the photo due to their small size.

Lindberg SS Gato US Fleet Submarine, 1/240, 70885

SS Gato US Fleet Submarine

$18

Still factory sealed. This full hull model is 15.5 inches long when assembled and features a full hull, main deck guns & AA guns, periscopes, diving planes, propeller & rudder detail and more. From 2007 but from the original molds. This kit has a fascinating history. These molds are believed to be the oldest production plastic ship model in US modeling history. The kit started as the Varney Fleet Sub in the mid 1940s. It is widely regarded as the very first USA all-plastic construction kit of a military vessel. Varney produced an all plastic aircraft kit at the same time, the PT-17. It is the #1 candidate for the first plastic airplane kit in the USA. Varney was a famous manufacture of model trains, first O then a leader in HO models. The two new additions did not sell very well - remember, the Gowland/Revell 'Highway Pioneers' had yet to be issued, so the boom in modeling had not occurred. Varney soon sold the molds for the Fleet Sub and the PT-17 to O-Lin (along with the molds for a fantastic multi-media kit with a wooden hull and plastic fittings, the Varney PT Boat ). O-Lin was a joint venture by Paul Lindberg and Mr. Olsen. O-Lin successfully issued the PT Boat (the PT Boat was given an injection molded hull and deck), PT-17 Stearman and Fleet Sub but modified the molds for the Sub. The original Varney kit had a solid, one-piece black hull and gray fittings. O-Lin engineers created a two-piece hull that provided a hollow hull and made from the same shot of plastic as the fittings. The 'Lin' in O-Lin, Paul Lindberg, was already well known for his publication of articles and plans for flying model aircraft in some of the leading aviation publications in the 1940/50s. Mr. Lindberg soon bought out Mr. Olsen and began marketing the same O-Lin kits under 'The Lindberg Line.' One immediate change was the box art. O-Lin box art was usually two or three color and not very exciting. Near the end of O-Lin, the partners asked Ray Gaedke to provide some box art. The bright colors and vivid action were an immediate hit, and Paul Lindberg took this lesson and Mr. Gaedke's artwork along to the new 'Lindberg Line.' Lindberg continue to issue the old Varney kits with the O-Lin modifications. The kit has been issued by a resurgent Lindberg as late at 2009, likely making it the longest in-production ship kit in US history.
