Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: VG+
$79
Very rare, early injection molded kit for the advanced collector. This kit was first released in 1952, so it was made at the same time that the Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' were setting the hobby industry on fire. The Mig was produced in this box up into 1956. This model is molded in the correct glossy silver with a unique early rectangle-base stand with "MIG-15" on it. Molded in gloss silver and clear plastic. The box is in 'very good+' condition and displays well; the main flaws are tape residue as shown on the top and lower long side. The kit has never been started. The contents are factory-new inside. All small parts are still sealed in the factory 'krinkle' bag; the few big parts not sealed have been inventoried complete, with 'very good' flat decals and 'excellent++' instructions. This is a one-owner kit from a recent collection, and he was given the kit as a gift in early 1950s. Hawk was a producer of wooden kits (with metal or plastic details) before and after WWII, and was one of the handful of manufacturers to produce such kits (known as 'solids') in a consistent 1/48 scale. Hawk made aircraft, ship and train models in this fashion. The very first injection molded aircraft kits in the United States may have been made by Varney in 1946, but Hawk was always an innovative and quality-driven company, and they took a gamble on injection molded kits well before they were popular. As early as 1946 they may have issued the 1/48 Curtiss R3C-1 with wheels and in 1948 the 'Evolution of the Jet' gift set. In 1949, they issued several kits - the Supermarine S6B, Gee-Bee, Howard Ike, F-84G and the Constellation. In 1952, the Mig-15 was released in 1/48. As with the previous kits, this is in the Hawk two-tone one-piece flip box.

Rare and from 1956. The hard-to-find 'Picture Gallery' series was Hawk's first move away from the thin, one-piece box and to hardbox, full color artwork. One day Bill Campbell explained to me how he got the job at Hawk: the artist doing the early Picture Gallery illustrations fell sick and Hawk needed more artwork immediately. Bill was already a commercial artist and Hawk contacted him through an agent. Bill said he 'did a few paintings for them' and shortly after that, he was painting (and designing) almost exclusively for Hawk. Hawk immediately discontinued the Picture Gallery series, which explains the short run and rarity today. In addition to the great art, this kit is molded in correct and beautiful dark gloss blue plastic. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present

Rare 1955 issue in the 'Picture Gallery' series. The dramatic scene shows Javelins intercepting IL-38 Bison bombers. Some of the Sparrow-like missiles are going ballistic (ground clutter perhaps?) while another blows the port wing forward (yes- forward) on the uppermost Bison. This series was done before Bill Campbell started doing the artwork for Hawk. As Bill told me, the Picture Gallery artist fell ill and Bill took over - that's how he got in with Hawk and why the PG issues were so short lived and rare today. This is an excellent kit for that time with Hawk's famous fit & finish, very fine raised & recessed surface detail, full landing gear, pilot figure, 6 air-to-air missiles and green-tinted clear canopy & 'teardrop' based display stand & arm. Even includes a 'near mint' condition capsule of factory glue and the special small, illustrated instruction sheet that is only about how to use the glue. The parts are the correct light silver plastic light green clear. Inside, the kit is exactly as it left the factory. All of the small parts are still sealed in the original factory 'krinkle' bags. Includes decals, assembly instructions and glue instructions. In the mid 1950s Hawk experimented with some interesting box shapes; this Javelin and the triangle-box F4D Skyray are the two best known. However, they were not the size of most other kits so stacking them was difficult. Hawk discontinued the practice fairly quickly and went back to standard size, rectangular model boxes.

Nicely detailed model with fine panel detail, cockpit, optional opened or closed bomb bay doors with internal iron bomb load, tail "stinger" and detailed landing gear with 'good' wheel well detail. The kit has never been started. Some parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags; the ones that are no longer sealed have been inventoried complete. Includes decals and instructions. The B-47 was a very advanced aircraft at the time. The XB-47 first flew in 1947. The big jet's speed was equal to or greater than all current fighter aircraft, so it received radar-controlled twin 20mm cannons in the tail as the only guns. Through the use of mid-air refueling, the B-47 gave SAC it's first all-jet force for nuclear or regular bomb delivery. Although it was tricky to fly, Stratojets flew into the mid 1960s. A program to strengthen the wings for low-level attack was responsible for prolonging the service life.
