Matchbox model kits originated in 1970, produced by the British company Lesney Products. Initially known for their die-cast toy cars, Matchbox expanded into plastic model kits in the 1970s. Their 1/72 scale military aircraft and 1/76 scale military vehicles gained popularity for their distinctive two- or three-color parts. In 1997, Matchbox was acquired by Mattel, further broadening its reach. Revell Germany purchased the Matchbox kit molds in the early 1990s and continues to occasionally reissue old Matchbox kits.

The Stranraer was one of several successful flying boats designed by RJ Mitchell for the RAF. Experience gained with the Southampton and Scapa flying boats was put to good use in design of the Stranraer which featured an all metal structure. Although replaced operationally with the Sunderland, examples of this aircraft were used till 1942 in WWII and many flew long after the war was over. Never started.
