Vulcan was part of the 1950s RAF 'V' bomber force with Victor and Valiant. The original mission was high-altitude atomic weapons delivery; however, by 1962 improvements in Soviet SAM designs made this too hazardous. That same year the 'V' force was moved to a low-altitude penetration role. However, in 1964, fatigue and crystalline corrosion were found in the wing rear spar attachment forgings in the Valiant, forcing it's retirement. Victors and Vulcans stayed on. Vulcan proved more adaptable to the new roll and was performing bombing raids as late as the Falklands Invasion. Victors were the final part of the 'V' force to be retired, but at that point all of the in service aircraft were tankers, which ere replace by L-1011s and VC-10s.
