The Be-6 began production in 1949 and was built through 1957 at the Beriev plant in Taganrog, Rostov Oblast, USSR. There were 19 variants and a total of 123 airframes built. Madge (the NATO reporting name) carried out a variety of missions, including long-range maritime reconnaissance, coastal & supply line patrols, torpedo and bombing strikes, mine-laying and transport operations. The reliable Be-6 remained in service until the late 1960s. Some aircraft ended service as civilian unarmed transports in Arctic regions. At least one survivor is preserved & currently at the Ukraine State Aviation Museum in Kiev, Ukraine. The Chinese operated their BE-6s until the engines wore out; no replacements were available, so many were re-engined with turboprops; some may be still in operation today.
