Fuji was a very famous and active Japanese capital ship. In the late 1890s the Japanese shipyards were not quite yet ready for such a project, so the Navy contracted with Thames Iron Works in Great Britain to build the class of four. Fuji took parts in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) in the Battle of Port Arthur with her sister Yashima. Fuji then engaged Russian forces in the Battle of the Yellow Sea and Tsushima. In 1910 she was designated a coastal defense ship in 1910 and served in a training roll. She was hulked in 1922 and actually survived WWII to be scrapped in 1948.

William H Low Co Rumsey 'Big City' Hose Wagon Circa 1890 - Wilo Line Fire Trucks, 1/24, FH130

Multimedia Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

$75

Very rare. Likely from the 1940s. William H Low Co., of Braintree Mass., issued the 'Wilo Line' which featured a superb series of antique commercial firefighting equipment, all in 1/48 scale. Bill Low was the designer of all kits and he was a superb model maker. The scale is given as 1/2" and the finished 'Big City' model wagon is approximately 7 inches long without the horse hitch and ~ 13 inches long with it. The kits were very advanced for the time and shared many of the pre-fabrication methods of Hudson Miniatures. Wilo Line kits features "all parts in this kit cut to size and shape." Includes plastic injection molded spoke wheels, precut and machined large and small wooden parts, beautiful, fully finished fire extinguishers, metal stock, a sealed bag of smaller parts including a great many more fully carved wood parts, metal parts and full size plans with numerous drawings and detailed text instructions. There is even a big photo of the actual prototype. The kit has never been started. Internal factory sealed small-parts bags with the non-sealed parts inventoried complete including instructions/plans. The kits in this line include Amoskeag Steamer, Hose Reel, Hose Wagon, Chemical Engine and many others. In most cases they are the only kits in existence of these historic vehicles. Bill Low did design at least one 'non-fire truck' kit in his Will-O-Line - a Conestoga Wagon, advertised as being 1/24 scale, kit #B14 for $2.85 listed as "This is another Museum Piece by Bill Low." After seeing these fire truck kits, I do not doubt that.

The model has not been started. The parts have been inventoried 100% complete with all paperwork included. Plans are in 'excellent+' condition. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911) and Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called "The Aviation Craze" that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around this time. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - they were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream-to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business- Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviation's Great Recruiter - Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.
