Cleveland Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat - (F6F3) Balsa Flying Aircraft, 1/16, SF-97

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. The kit came from a long time collector of 1930s and 1940s models and is in exceptional condition. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and decals (if issued with the kit). The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called 'The Aviation Craze' that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business, called Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviations great Recruiter, Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Tamiya US Army Heavy Field Piece M2 155mm Long Tom Gun, 1/21, DT103-450

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Legendary and rare. This early, large-scale Tamiya kit is an amazing operating model, even by modern standards. Well detailed and features a complex gun elevating system that works by turning the proper hand wheel which then functions through a series of metal pinion gears, functional elevation pistons, working transversing gear through turning the correct hand wheel (through metal pinion gears also), opening breech, movable trailing arms for travel or firing position, removable wheel towing set with realistic suspension that you build up one leaf spring at a time and much more. This model does everything but launch a projectile; there is a inner metal barrel and some other (rubber banded moving) parts I do not understand, so it may well fire something. The model is molded in dark olive drab, light gray, with rubber tires and with a large number of metal parts. The kit has never been started. Inside it is exactly as it left the factory, with all parts factory sealed in clear bags with Tamiya 155mm M2 Gun paper headers. The box has very good color and gloss, is intact, complete and has four solid corners but has general wear as shown.

Geobra Vanguard Rocket With Satellite - (ex Renwal), 1/50, 401

Cardstock Paper Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Extremely rare model from the late 1950s. The scale is commonly given as 1/48, but the instructions state it is 1/50 scale. Large 18" high kit features removable panels and full interior detail with rocket engines, fuel pumps, extensive piping detail from tanks to engines, helium oxygen and nitric acid tanks, instrument section and satellite with folding antennas. Launching stand and a ground crew of two are included. The model is correctly molded in silver plastic. It has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete including all parts, decals and instructions. Please NOTE: at one point, the decal where partially stuck to the instructions. Someone pulled them off; so there is a tear on the decal sheet and also on the instructions. Please note that this kit must be shipped insured. Geobra is a German company dating back to 1876; they are famous today for the Playmobil figures. In the late 1950s they started a line of plastic kits. It included this big scale Vanguard, a 1/50 scale V-2 with Launcher, two gliders and seven modern jet fighters that flew via catapult launch. Also listed is a General Patton tank than bears more than a passing resemblance to the Renwal issue. History usually says that Geobra originally cut the molds for the 1/50 Vanguard, then Renwal reissued it. It would be interesting to know if it and the Patton are the other way around.

Berkeley Super-Brigadier - 58 Inch Wingspan Flying Aircraft For R/C - (Super Brigadier)

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Very early radio control aircraft with a giant wingspan. In the free-flight roll, it meets the old Pan-American Airways Pay-Load Contest requirements for class A and B. Note the similarity in design to the early free-flight models - most early RC models had this appearance because of the stability required due to the difficult and unpredictable nature of early R/C control. Model features shaped and notched wing edges, die-cut plywood firewall, complete metal hardware, cut out windshield, superb full size plans with building instructions, rubber wheels, covering material and much more. Never started and complete. Berkeley is a very famous manufacturer of flying model kits from the Golden Age of flying aviation, about 1932-1954. Founded in 1933 by William Effinger, the company was quite progressive in producing quality kits - it was likely the Berkeley 'Buccaneer' was the first gas powered model in kit form. In the later 1930s, Effinger acquired the services of a very talented Henry Struck. Struck went on to design numerous award-winning kits under the Berkeley name. Berkeley weathered the post WWII recession and emerged as a major kit producer in the late 1940 and 1950s. These were great years for Berkeley and they produced some incredible and large kits. The company went bankrupt in about 1960 however. Fox engines (Duke Fox) bought the company and released the kits alongside his own FOX models and engines. This arrangement did not last, and in the early 1960s the Berkeley name disappeared from hobby shop shelves.

Lindberg is a company with a fascinating history The original 'Lindberg Line' stretches back to the 1930s when Paul Lindberg drew plans for famous modeling magazines and marketed his balsa wood 'stick and tissue' by urging dealers to carry the '...Complete Lindberg Line'. After the war, Lindberg and Olsen had a strong hand in early United States injection molded kit development. Please see the article located on this website about early USA plastic kit manufacturers.
